    Posted: 24 Apr 09 at 12:40pm

I have had an order with Lonton & Gray sailmakers for two months for a Topper Topaz sail. On their website they have them listed as being available to buy but when you try to buy one they say the site is in need of updating but they will make one for you. Whenever I have sent an email ( twice)for an idea of a delivery date it remains unanswered and a phone call (again only twice)is met with a very curt "I'll phone you when it's ready" and the phone gets put down! I know of another person who is suffering the same treatment.        &n bsp;    I have emailed a few other sailmakers to ask for a quote but they seem to be too busy to have the  to courtesy of sending a reply.

I only want the sail as a spare and as such do not want to pay Topper prices.  Has anyone any thoughts on where to get a Topaz sail in good condition or new?

A few years back our Club purchased a replica (training)sail for a standard Topper dinghy from Dolphin Sails.

Considerable saving on OEM price and very good quality.

Thank you very much for the suggestion.

I got a good fake Laser sail from insails via ebay, www.insails.com is their website, maybe they do them for the Topaz.

Dave at Dynamic sails is definitely a good choice to call.  He'd be my recommendation.

The L+G "sail loft" is in Burnham and have used them for centre sails.
The issue with them at the moment is they will be busy doing cruiser sails for the coming season and that will be more profitable than the one off sail.

I am not trying to justify them but they should keep to their alloted schedue time otherwise that is bad feedback.

Hi Richard

That's interesting to know. It makes the situation a bit clearer. I can appreciate that a few bobs worth of Topaz sail isn't very exciting but all the same, to not reply to emails and to not offer a date of any kind ( let alone the, perhaps, rather abrupt tone on the phone) isn't a great advert. It's the attitude that sucks. I'm merely trying to buy...give money to them after all.

My brother knows of them and says, like you do, that they are most reputable and of good quality which I do not doubt by the way!! Perhaps they will come good soon!! Thanks

One to avoid then by the sound of it. Don't need the business, inaccurate website sales information, and limited communication skills.

Hope you have better luck elsewhere.
Mind you, you would hope that luck wouldn't
have to figure in the equation.

I have tried to be not too judgmental in my initial comments but to be honest you've summed the situation up perfectly. As you have pointed out their website still states that there are sails available to be bought when in reality there are none. This was the case in jan' when I firrst enquired.        &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         By the way, a good used sail would also fit the bill!! So if you know of one..... Thankyou for your comments.

David
