Richard was a good friend, I always envied his talent, I hope the business he built up will survive as his legacy, and keep Liese, Steve, Taxi et al in work

On behalf of the Norris family I'd like to send our love and thoughts to Richard's close friends and family.
Richard helped all four of us in our early sailing careers in GP14's, always happy to offer advice, support or just have a chat. He will be sorely missed by all dinghy sailors. Stuart, Ian, Phillip Norris and Jane Olive (Previously Norris) |

Although I gave up sailing some years ago, Richard has always remained a dear friend. We competed against each other in GP's for 10 years or so, usually with me the "bridesmaid" and Rich No1. Our famlies spent a lot of time together over the years and my deepest sympathies go out to Ben, Steph and the rest of Richard's family. He contributed so much to the sailing world and to various fleets. Always happy to help others without a single iota of arrogance. He will be very, very sincerely missed. Rocket. |

A great sailor and probably the most modest guy you would ever meet that
was world class at the helm of a dinghy. Knew Richard from many years in GPs and am so shocked and saddened that I will not bump into him again..............A model person...... Chris Pallot |

Very sad. I only met Richard a handful of times but he always seemed so down to earth and approachable, and he always very kindly supported the Draycote Fireball fleet in terms of event sponsorship etc. I'm sure I speak on behalf of all Fireballers at the club to say that he will be sadly missed and our deepest condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues.

I am so very sad to hear this tragic news. I was privelidged to know Richard since 1976, when we first set eyes on this new talent in the GP 14 fleet, at the Nationals at Mumbles, where he finishes around 7th , i think. He then started his domination of the fleet, which has lasted a staggering 30 years + We had some great battles over the years, both on the water and in business, and he was a true gent on every occasion. He had an uncanny knack of making many less errors than his opponent, and he ground you down on the race course with relentless ease. His ability to win in so many different classes shows his supreme talent, and certainly in my lifetime i have never known a better sailor, although he did crew for me once at the N W Champs at Leigh & Lowton, in 1977, and he was a crap crew!!!We capsized about 5 times in 1 race.WE then changed over for the next race , and capsized 6 times !!
So, sorry to see you go Richard, you will be missed by many, and i look forward to eventually doing battle again in the next life !! Love to all your family,
Simon Relph & Family |

I can only endorse the views already expressed so strongly. I was shocked to hear this very sad news - Richard was always one of the really good people in this world and was a great ambassador for the sport. I too, remember him arriving on the scene and being impressed from then on.
Our sincere sympathies go to his family and colleagues at this very sad time. He will be missed ....... Martin Jolleys and family |

The Lark Class will miss Richard, who has supported us over many
years in sail development and by sponsoring events. Without his help
many Larkies would have missed out on the great sailing experience.
