Well another way of explaining it is to imagine the two trapeze wires
attached to the side of the boat and the overhang bit you sit on detaches and swings out when you need it to is I guess a simpler way of putting it. Would you then need mast halyards? Not sure, depends on how well the side locks back in I guess, could be a bit of a disaster in a windward capsize if you are out on the swing wire, then again no it should return to the hull if you fell off it. Not sure, be an interesting concept to try out. |

You mean a wire at each end? So two trapeze wires? I didn't fancy the chances of getting onto that reliably: that was why I drew a single wire version... How big do you visualise this thing being - I suppose if it were a metre or more long it might be possible. Something like this? ![]() Edited by JimC |

No not quite, just the bottom bit, kind of a bench made from the gunwhale overhang, like a playground swing affair, attached by wire with maybe a guide so it returns home, maybe a bit of a buoyancy half circle underside can't remember why I thought that bit. The advantages would be no significant weight increase and the wire supports the mast at the head, no need for sliding mechanism like the Canoe or that Skate, other than making it work and the limitation of the crew leg length, I can't think of any serious disadvantage. Unfortunately I'm in a bit of a work frenzy mode at the moment so haven't got time to draw it up properly, but I'm sure it's a viable alternative to racks, trapezes and or sliding seat mechanism. Edit PS I was seriously tempted by a canoe that was at the Dinghy show, blue, all carbon jobby, couldn't see any way of steering it I guess there must be a wiggle stick thing somewhere, it just wasn't apparent or do they just use the force like us? Yeah Grumpf the international Canoe. They even do it with a 23sqr metr assy Kite. You can also fit one with a kick up centre board, and the dagger board cases have a special kick up system should you strike the ground landing. |

So you mean something like this? I'm not convinced of the advantages you claim!

So like a sliding seat on a Canoe? Or are you thinking about having the pivot point in the middle of the boat, and then having it swivel from out one side, round the transom, and then out the other side?
Maybe a little Paint diagram to illustrate would be good here Grumph. There is a class of boat down under which has twin sliding seats. I forget the name of it right now but if I find it I'll post a link. Edit: Found it... Skate Edited by timnoyce |

So, I had another flash of inspiration this morning and wondered if it has
been tried elsewhere already, or indeed if the idea is practical. It concerns the old problem Racks v Trapeze and I wondered if anyone had ever considered a swinging seat. In other words detach a part of the side of the hull (or an additional bit) you sit on, by kicking out still sitting on it (like a playground swing style)and it attached by trap wire in a guide if necessary and held back in place by bungee cords or whatever. When not being used it would simply swing back into place making the bear offs simple on the lee side. One or two folk could sit on it and it would support the hiking moment without pressure at the back of the legs and you should get out as far as a trapeze without the need to hook in and out, I guess longer legged folk would get an advantage, but then I guess they get that on a trapeze anyway. Anyone seen anything like it? Edited by G.R.F. |

I'm not, but hull shape is a compromise. It is difficult to go faster than the 505 in all conditions, so in order to do so in some, the all round ability has been compromised. I suspect you will find the Alto slower than the 505 in almost all conditions, as the compromise has been made for ease of handling. The 505 is a work of genius, and that is timeless.
