So, what's the lightest reasonable sized boat (12ft+) ever recorded then?
Do we know stuff like that? |

Moth's are probably the lightest at roughly 10-20k, although they are 11ft so wont count.

And the hulls are less than a foot wide, so won't do much without the wide wings that GRF doesn't want. I'm a little confused, you come up with a list of things you want the boat to do, a list of things you don't want the boat to have, but little that I have seen that makes a boat useable in 3 knots and 25 of wind, which is what you need in order to race. If your boat is unbeatable in a force 6, as you say all real men's boats should be, then you are really going to struggle in the light stuff, which is why the skiffy boats are optimized for conditions that you feel are too girly. |

Its not that 'real men' need a boat for Force 6, but lets harp back to the
dear old five oh, it's equally capable in 5 knots and 25 knots, that's all I'm asking for thirty, nay forty years later and modern development can't match that range. Sure it can get a few lycra clad thousand yard stare boys to look good on Lake Garda, but what's the point if they look like total tools when it's a bit breezy? Seriously why are you all so anti being able to sail in any condition? |

I'm not, but hull shape is a compromise. It is difficult to go faster than the 505 in all conditions, so in order to do so in some, the all round ability has been compromised. I suspect you will find the Alto slower than the 505 in almost all conditions, as the compromise has been made for ease of handling. The 505 is a work of genius, and that is timeless.

So, I had another flash of inspiration this morning and wondered if it has
been tried elsewhere already, or indeed if the idea is practical. It concerns the old problem Racks v Trapeze and I wondered if anyone had ever considered a swinging seat. In other words detach a part of the side of the hull (or an additional bit) you sit on, by kicking out still sitting on it (like a playground swing style)and it attached by trap wire in a guide if necessary and held back in place by bungee cords or whatever. When not being used it would simply swing back into place making the bear offs simple on the lee side. One or two folk could sit on it and it would support the hiking moment without pressure at the back of the legs and you should get out as far as a trapeze without the need to hook in and out, I guess longer legged folk would get an advantage, but then I guess they get that on a trapeze anyway. Anyone seen anything like it? Edited by G.R.F. |

So like a sliding seat on a Canoe? Or are you thinking about having the pivot point in the middle of the boat, and then having it swivel from out one side, round the transom, and then out the other side?
Maybe a little Paint diagram to illustrate would be good here Grumph. There is a class of boat down under which has twin sliding seats. I forget the name of it right now but if I find it I'll post a link. Edit: Found it... Skate Edited by timnoyce |

So you mean something like this? I'm not convinced of the advantages you claim!

Yeah Grumpf the international Canoe. They even do it with a 23sqr metr assy Kite. You can also fit one with a kick up centre board, and the dagger board cases have a special kick up system should you strike the ground landing. |
