I've seen the threads on replica sails, but unless I've missed something there was a pretty sizeable majority pro replica?

Opinion at my club is split between those, like me, who think the rule is stupid and we need to change our SI's along the lines others have suggested and those who also think the rule is stupid but we should ignore it!

I can't ever recall a rule change where so many people seem to feel the need to find a way around it.

"So taking things to an extreme, what would happen if the Solo class, say, decided that port had right of way?   "

"Class rules may change only racing rules 42, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 and 54." RRS 2009-2012

Port vs Starboard is rule 10, so the calss rules can't change it.

The Sailing Instructions can't change it (unless you're going to race to non IYRU rules).

i.e. could an RS class hit marks in club racing?

I once had someone who was sailing an RS in a handicap event tell me he didn't need to do a turn for hitting a mark as he was sailing an RS

I've had that too; I nearly fell over side as I was laughing so much!

Oh yes they can. For example IRC class rules modify RRS 52 (manual power).

No. It's extremely common for yachts to race that aren't in a "class" at all.

I do not believe they do. There are many tiny classes along the south coast that would not want to pay the affiliation fee. You can create a class as and when you like.

I could be wrong but I do not believe the Rooster 8.1 class is affiliated with the RYA yet yet there are getting of for 400 or so of them out there.

Rather than individual clubs inventing new classes of Laser-esque boats, it would be better for someone to take the lead and create a LAZOR class, based very heavily on the Laser, but allowing freedom of manufacturer. It would be the biggest class in the world, because all existing Lasers would be class compliant, as well as all Lasers with replica sails, masts, foils and hulls.

FWIW, I don't have a problem with Laser charging highish prices for new sails. It is what keeps the costs of the boats down, leads to high volume of boat sales (new boat only costs about the same as a new sail) and pays for all the glossy ads in Y&Y.  Of course, that opens the door for cheap replicas, so market forces should balance the price of official Laser sails.

Technically, does a class need to be affilliated to the RYA to be able to race in club races run under RRS? Otherwise, at present, these quasi-Lasers should not be racing. Nor should my NS14, nor any other new class.

One thing did occur to be during the extremely long performance of 'Don't look back in anger' I endured last night.

So you produce a product, rules are introduced which prevent the use of any alternative to this product.  Only hang on a minute apparently you can by a North Laser sail or a Hyde Laser sail, both thorough Laser. http://www.lasersailing.com.au/shop/store.php?pg1-cid9.html

And both at considerably more than the cost of a replica.  So it appears we have an artifically created monopoly combined with price fixing.  All with the willing support of ISAF.....discuss!

Of course the ILA being an independent body with no commercial affiliation to LaserPerformace Sailcraft (or whatever they are called this week) will be be all over this to ensure the best needs of their members are served!
