Ok - where can I find the PY for Musto Skiff GBR293?

Same as any other PY, its allocated to your boat by the race management using the data at their disposal. Its conventional for the race management to give the same number to every boat in a one design class but not essential. If a club really wanted to save sailors money then rather than permitting replica sails they would give a PY allowance for old sails. Then Laser sailors could use 'orrible old rags until they actually fell apart.

You learn something every day (well most days anyway ....)

But the best thing is of course scratch class racing so why would you want to give different Lasers different PYs based on sail age? Plus all the work you make for the race recorders ...

Ask your club. PYs come from the club running the racing. Two clubs could give different PYs to the same boat.

Hear, hear. He's someone who has always gone out of his way to help and encourage other sailors. "Putting nothing into sailing" - bah humbug to that.

Nope. A PY is for an individual boat. It's very common in club-level yacht racing for a club to give a PY to a specific yacht based on it's individual sail-plan, prop configuration etc. A club may choose to give all the boats in a class the same PY, or it may choose to apply golf-type handicaps and give different PYs to boats in the same class. Similarly it's common in development classes for clubs to give a more favourable PY numbers to older boats in a class. There's nothing whatsover stopping a club giving a PY number to an out-of-class boat and nothing to stop that number being the same - or different - to class-compliant boats.

The solution is of course to form local classes/handicap groupings in which only a single class fits with on tinny winny modification......

Please don't get me wrong, for large events the rule seems to fit the bill, and i don't dispute the hard work but in by national and international governing bodies, but we all know sailors who will use this rule to protest out sailors who are using replica sails in club races on a wednesday evening.  Why not re-word the rule to read at any race held under the auspisis of the Class assoc........ie opens/regional/Nationals etc.  Any leave clubs to decide if they approve the use of replicas for club races.  Lets face it where manufacturers are charging a fair price for the product there is no market for replicas anyway.  If ISAF wants to protect revenue streams why not formalise the use of replicas for club races and charge the replica manufacturer the ISAF fee.  That would go down well with a certain very large manufacturer....not.

Oh and lost measurement certificates, you should see the pain in the rear end getting the ones for the Europe is turning into, so technically I can be kicked form any race I enter in it!

And taking the example of well know builder of replica sails, as well as making a tidy profit I always found him and his team hugely approachable and willing to offer advice and tips whenever asked.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

Why dosn't the rule apply for h'cap racing?

A PY is for a class of boat and a class is defined by a set of class rules; we may not be able to be changed due to 87.

The only way round this is for the club to define a new class (the XYZ) that looks like a Laser but has a replica sail that happens to have a PY of a Laser.
