I have to say I share Ricks opinion on this one, and some of the other comments back it up. If a tally system only highlights that someone is missing once the race officer has come down from the box and checked the board/book/box etc, then trolleys still on the top of the jetty do the same job. THe race officer on the day should have stopped everyone as they came through the finish and calculated the race on average laps, but its not always possible to have your most experienced race officers on so you have to cut them some slack. Training will indeed help and is on the agenda for our April club meeting, and hopefully I'll be able to take something away from the RYA conferance next Saturday.

Cheers

Launch a man(person)hunt?

If you have missing bands and can't account for the person then that's what you have to do, otherwise pointless having the system. Whether you need a tally system or signing off sheet really depends on the size of your fleet and the sailing area. What works for 6 boats in an estuary won't work for 100 boats on the open sea 2 miles from shore. Its a bit unfair to suggest your race officers need glasses, maybe they need more people, training and support instead.

we have class books which everyone whos racing signs into with boat name, sail number, hull colour, helm and crew names.  this then goes up to race office and is used for registering the finishers.  books then put back for sailors to sign off. if the race officer and team do their jobs correctly everyone should be seen finishing/retiring and marked as having done so.

at the end of the day books are checked by race officer to make sure no dsq's.  safety is done at time of finish so no one has to go up to the race office.

the race team can see clearly see who has retired from the office and if need be talk to them from there.

Depends on the conditions and time. Quite often a quick ask around as to where the person is is normaly suficient.

Anyone caught not using them/fogetting has to pay a fiver fine I think which goes to the RNLI.

But for club level it would b a bit harder but if you have a board with hooks on it and bands then when everyone signs on with the race comittie thye get issued a number and have to pick up the band for that number etc. and put it back when thye come ashore you could tell if everyone was off the water but it wouldnt end up in the whole DSQ situation.

With the incentive being monitary but if it went to the RNLI you would get less complaints about it being unfair.

But what action do you take when there is a missing band?

What do you do if someone dosn't sign off?

Usually the ROD will DSQ that person and go home ... so what is the point.

.. and if little jonney was on the water and the ROD did the above & little jonny dies who's going to get sued?

My view is just sign on and sign off if you have a penalty etc ...

At the end of the day check for trollies ... if they are all gone OK. If there are any still on the beach & no boats can be seen you have a problem.

I know this has already been discussed, but events at my club have made me raise the subject again. About 8 years ago we did away with the requirement to sign off at my Sailing Club as the race officers didnt like people wandering into the race box just as they were finishing people etc. and then ask to sign off. As we sail on an estuary directly infront of the race box we decided we would only sign off on long distance races where we sailed outside the view of the race team. Unfortunately at our last race of 2006, a big squall came through and for those unfortunate to be still out on the water they all got mashed! Luckily we had an onshore breeze but with competitors running off along the river bank to help other competitors the race team struggled to find out who was back ashore.
As a formerly active RS circuit sailor I've seen the various tally methods being used but can see problems with all these systems.
So does anyone have a suitable suggestion ? (I personally feel that an appointment at Specsavers would sort the problem out in the main, but not PC to say such things in club meetings!)
