Plymouth uni throw loads of money at the watersports. Also we were helped out a bit by mountbatten sailing centre. i think we went halves on the boats with them. I know what you mean though. My flatmates are in the frisbee team (ye is is a sport lol) and they get barely any help by the uni and have to cough up for everythin themselves, whereas the sailing and yachting clubs get 2 brand new boats worth around £25k each

With sailing and other watersports its seen more as an investment. Personally some of my decison on where to go to uni was decided by the sailing clubs.

If the new j80s attract about 30 students next year payin £1k each, theyve almost got their money back.

bloody students!

Didn't have those when i was a member of plymouth poly sailing club 20 years ago.We had  5 lasers, an old knackered 470 and the hot larks if you could get to sail in one.

Don't know you're born.

The fireball belonged to my dad. Weve just kept it for sentimental reasons really, but it was taking a beating at Plymouth and its in awesome condition nd is still very fast, so its back in the garage at home. I used to sail a 600, and i sold that and went halves with my mate on the 49er. It wasnt costing to much until i decided to go straight through the main, so weve just got a new one on the insurance. And ye my liver is taking a severe beating aswell  Also work two days a week at a yacht repair yard, so that keeps the bank manager happy lol

Grrr Yeh some uni's do throw loads at the sailing teams but then again others dont

Even if we did have any thrown at us it would go straight to teamracing anyways.

I was Commodore of Liverpool Uni SC for 2 years, graduated back in June.

When I started we had 4 shagged out Laser II's... and a budget of £1000 a year.  I cannot believe how much cash you guys get!  2 brand new yachts/sportboats?!  Where does the cash come from to keep them and maintain them?

I struggled and eventually raised the money for a second hand flight of Firefly's... and that much money was unheard of before I got my grubby mits on it.

You ask Charlie Chandler (you guys seem to know him), he was the Commodore before me.

Making Charles Chandler the Commodore of anything, is like giving a Monkey a gun!  was it because he was the only sailor at liverpool uni at that time.  Still shouldnbt give him to much abuse i am crewing for him at the first tasa event and he may get me wet.

Russ, if you capsize, watch your head. When we sailed the fireball together, he had a habit of using my head as a step, so he could avoid the water!! He stayed dry everytime!
