Hi all

i need to repair the seam between the hull and deck on our 420, shes letting in a fair bit of water esp, when upside down!! i thought fibreglass tape would be the best option but a bit bewildered about where to buy..? not as keen on matting from our local diy store as it looks poo, also, what is the best covering paint/gelcoat?  where do u buy yours? also if anyone out there has a 420 what self baler has it got ive just bought an inside fit by accident when our old battered one is an outside fit. (rondar hull 48096)

Hi Gem,

I dont think glass matting et al would be the way to go here. If memory serves the 420 deck/hull joint rolls over and the 2 halves are glued together. You may find you stand a better chance by digging the old glue out and replacing it with new (I used wests when i did my Laser). Not only will it look neater it will probably be stronger as well.

The Hobie Tiger trick to solve leaky dagger board cases is to thin out some polyester resin and then pour it inside the hull and rotate the hull to get the resin to the leaky joint - just leave the inspection hatch open long enough to vent the thinner and don't put a match inside it to see if it has gone off...

One step forwards, 2 steps back...

Mending the 420 is more like mending a Laser. You have to turn the boat over, dig out all the glop round where the joint has failed, as Jeffers says. I know most professional repairs say to use the same material to mend the boat as was used to build it, in this case thickened polyester resin. I've both used epoxy and polyester on these jobs in the past, and found both work. Most important thing is to get rid of what was in there first, even drilling down into it or using a router, if you dare!

a nice bog of epoxy and microfibers will be very strong and then possiably wrap some glass tape over it all.  you can get all of this stuff online

from shops like

purple marine

ldc

northampton sailboats

If you do the scraping out and the "bog" properly, there will be no need for the glass tape, so leaving the gunwale looking as it did before.
