You have all mentioned doublehander boats here.

The £4k laser everone is talking about has the top of the range kit. The laser itself can be picked up for around £3k.

Laser Sailing must be doing something right because I can't remember seeing another boat in the dinghy park with a sail number greater than 180,000.

Great...just one problem you can't sail cats at a lot of clubs. Thats where the Laser wins out.

Having said that the Laser fleet at my club is in serious decline these days with people moving to other classes such as Phantoms, Blazes and the new Solution.

On the Laser website the base model laser, no trolley / covers etc is £3550, Laser Race is £3850, G-XD £4195.

The basic comparison I made at the start was the boat show offers wihich included trolleys and / or covers whereby the Osprey was £7995 and Laser Race £3995

I think you'll find it was 1 (one). The sail numbers worldwide are unique, in one series. If there are, say, 183,000 now, then that's 500 odd per year since design in 1970! Not bad really.......

not entirely.... Laser never numbered all of their boats sequentially, im pretty sure that they missed every second number for quite a while at one stage. it migh tnot have been eery second number but there is definelty not the same number of lasers been produced as the latest sail number.

Quote from Bruce Kirby's website:-

"......and the result of that was the Laser, which hit the market in January of 1971. The success of this little boat - there are now 182,000 worldwide - inspired the designer to resign from the magazine and go full time into sailboat design. "
