On the Laser website the base model laser, no trolley / covers etc is £3550, Laser Race is £3850, G-XD £4195.

The basic comparison I made at the start was the boat show offers wihich included trolleys and / or covers whereby the Osprey was £7995 and Laser Race £3995

Great...just one problem you can't sail cats at a lot of clubs. Thats where the Laser wins out.

Having said that the Laser fleet at my club is in serious decline these days with people moving to other classes such as Phantoms, Blazes and the new Solution.

Laser Sailing must be doing something right because I can't remember seeing another boat in the dinghy park with a sail number greater than 180,000.

Controversial I know coming from me but compare a laser to an RS500 and the Laser then seems REALLY expensive.

The 500 really does look good and is going to do very well I think.

In the motor trade if a manufacturer puts the price of there product up to much then new sails fall, and hence used prices crash!!  The problem with laser is they monopolise the market.  They are a great product but as long as people keep buying them they will keep charging the same money! so unless everyone is willing to boycott buying lasers the price will rise.

Common if you want real value for money and a cheap new boat get an international 14. Now what was wrong with that statement . . . . . . . .?

Yes laser are in a good position because at many clubs if you want good racing you must have one but this didnt happen by accident. If there wernt good points with the boatthen this wouldnt have happened.

Everyone knows the only good thing about the Laser is the racing.

OK, yep, rising price of new product means S/H prices firm up.
