As JonEmmett said a few pages back, as olympic standard women are likely to be fitter and stronger than club sailors, should olympic classes not reflect this? I disagree, as where would said olympic sailors come from except from club sailing? I think it would be quite daunting to start sailing a boat that is to much for you until you've got stronger, and people might not like to start training just to sail a particular class, but would probably prefer something they can get straight into and not be totally overwhelmed.

I would have thought that the whole point of Olympic classes is to be a shop window for how a particular class can be sailed well, and to inspire the mortal to have a go. With the possible exception of 2 classes (Tornado and 49er) I think it would be possible to get into and sail any Olympic class (all be it not well) straight from RYA 2. Surely the introduction of a extreme technical class (and I count twin wiring as this) would go against this ideal.

As much as we might wish that it was "Panic, Chaos, Destruction", the Olympic motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius" which is latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger. The Olympics is all about getting the ultimate perfromance from the ultimate athletes. Without Nandrolone. I do like the your concept though. Let's put real obstacles in the 110m hurdles instead of those namby-pamby little fences hat fall over. And how about a couple of mothers and toddlers at the shallow end in the swimming races. |

What about sunbathers on the discus range (Like frisbee on the beach) Or cats doing theit business in the long jump sandpit. or an old boy on a disabled car on the cycle track

I don't understand why people think that the 49er is out of range for the average sailor....how many club sailors have them? And also, why is the boat out of range for women??? I sail one and I'm not a 70kg, 6ft women! I currently weigh about 55-60kg and I'm 5'3 ft..........I also have a dodgy knee and back which has stopped me from hiking in the RS200 where I was one of the top crews last year. Oh and get this.....I'm only 16 I currently crew the 49er and my helm is about 77-80kg, so we are about the right weight for the boat. I can manage the kite hoists and drops fine, I play the main and I do all the normal crew jobs as well......I don't have to ask my helm to do anything for me on the boat apart from pulling the daggerboard up due to the tightness of the dagerboard case packing. The spinnkaker is big, but I actually find it easier and nicer to handle than the spinnaker on the Laser 4000, which I used to own last year as well. When I first started sailing the 49er in Sep 2005, I had never done the mainsheet as a crew, never been on a twin wire boat(apart from a Cherub in light winds once), and the biggest kite I had ever handled was that on the Cherub which was 21sqm.....compared to the 49er which is 38sqm. Oh and the fastest boat on py that I had raced was the Laser4000 on 908 compared to the 49er on 747!!! I think it is completely rubbish when people are saying that girls cannot handle a kite bigger than the RS800.......I sailed one of those as well....and it was as easy as anything! The 49er is a great boat and I think it's bad that people are sl*gging it off saying it's only suitable for Olympic sailors and people with huge wallets Ok, rant over.....not in a good mood as term starts on Monday and I want it to be the start of Xmas again!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'm in total agreement Kita, loads of bull-sh*t coming out about girls not being capable of sailing skiffs. How many people making comments about the 49er have actually sailed the boat themselves, it seems a lot of unfounded assumptions are being made. Think the general fact of the matter is that certain boat manufacturers want to create a gap in the market and since there isn't a double-handed female skiff, there's the gap. Hope the Ronstan SK4 (?) gets the position, then it will be interesting to see if there is increased support to keep the 49er open if the 29erXX isn't selected. There are females who sail skiffs, Kita sails with me, Fiona Jordan sails 14s, sure there are a few other girls in the 14 fleet, Tracey Covell did exceptionally well in the 5000 and that's before considering female cat sailors. Would make more sense allocate the slot to a lightweight open skiff class, but reckon the 49er will be pushed in the direction of Male double handed skiff, there will be whatever is selected as the female skiff and a few years down the line, there will be another slot opened for an open skiff.

I do not doubt that many women could sail a 49er. Sure its big and looks slightly scary but [not knowing the 49er class rules] you could always 'up' the purchases on the rig. My thing is that, while many western girlys could sail it, what about girlys from asia. I am not doubting their ability, its just westerners tend to be bigger than asia girls. As the olympics is a global event surely this has be looked at. Therefore boats such as the RS800, 29erxx etc probably would be better.

Women have competed in 49ers and done very well, one such woman is Tina Baylis who is now the silver medalist in the I14 wolds. Katie Nurtin doers awfully well in the 14 as well. Pease Glaser was a top ranked Tornado driver and scares us frequently in the A Class ( winning regattas etc). Trina Elvstrom has a sliver medal in the Tornado as well. As a friend of mine ( who was an elite sculler) once said, "Excuse me , but isn't this supposed to be athletic?" In many parts of the world an Olympic Gold Medal is worth enough to motivate people to try anything and do anything to succeed. This includes several forms of self mutilation. So personally I don't see why a sailing class has to be any more accessible and easy than the high hurdles, the vault, a triple axle, or the downhill. SHC
