The average crew weight would be 65Kgs (130/2) which is below the average weight of the top Radial girls....

If the 49er had a weight equalisation thing a la RS800 then it would be possible to have a mixed high performance dinghy class at the Olympics. This would also allow the IOC to reduce the number of sailing medals,as per their intentions. At club level we all compete in mixed fleets. I know the 49er is seen as a bit of a macho beast but there should be no reason why an all female team could not compete in one. Other than that the 29xx seems a good bet but, as norbert says, you'll be restricting the weight range in the other direction. |

The 49er had weight equilisation so there is no reason why it couldn't be used as per your idea. I don't think it's used on them at the moment though |

The reason the weight equalisation came off is everyone is on the minimum weight anyway. With alot of crews sailing around 144KGs (Radial sized person at the back, Laser sized person at the front).

But they are not average girls - the average 25 female on a global scale must be around the 55kg mark ... Rick |

You are quite correct, however as the sport stands would you not agree which most sailing girls are above average (how much trouble am I going to get into for this comment!

I think the sport should appeal to average women ... the reason sailing perhaps has heavier than average women is because of the classes available to them ... Perhaps many of the 55kg women go off to play beach volley ball instead of trying to lug a Radial upwind in a chop ... (ducks for cover ...) |

I agree, classes for club sailors should be designed for the average weight of the particpants. However the average Olympic sailor is considerably stronger and fitter (and so in real terms heavier) than Joe (or Jane) Bloggs, so perhaps the Olympic classes should reflect this ?
