ISAF Evaluation Event 2007
An open invitation to classes for
consideration as the Fundamental
Criteria It is anticipated that alternative boats to the current Olympic equipment will emerge for possible selection for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. A number of existing International Classes are clearly eligible for consideration. In addition the ISAF Council policy is that classes need not have International Status at the time of selection of equipment in November 2008. B. In order to update the ISAF Council of details and characteristics of newer types of boat which may be considered for selection, an evaluation team has been appointed. ISAF has decided that the boats to be evaluated shall conform to the following fundamental criteria:
High Performance · The dinghy must be able to sail faster off the wind than the wind. Crew Specification · Female crews (average combined weight 120 –140 kgs). Optional Characteristics · Twin
Trapeze. Safe · Easy to recover by the crew after capsize without any external help.
Equipment Control · Closed Class Rules

RS800? - not sure how "international" this class is, but would be a good one I'm sure.

The 29erXX has got to be the top candidate. However last time the top candidate was assumed to be the 5 Tonner and we know where that came - nowhere!
No doubt there will be others, but its shed loads of work to put together a proposal. You can't, for instance, just take along a Cherub and a piece of paper saying "We'll freeze this as a one design for the Olympics". There's probably more work in the business plan and preparation than there is in actually designing and building a boat! Edited by JimC |

Real shame it has to be a Mono, as the F16 would be ideal !

Dinghy Magazine reports that LDC are considering creating a modified RS800 as a candidate alongside the 29erXX, without it replacing or threatening the status of the existing boat.

Ummm, it says they make some change to deck layout and the like, but not much else - but they've thought of the new name! |

ISAF have not given much notice for this trial and as such I guess that the boats at the trial will be existing classes. It would be pretty difficult to develop a new class between now & April but I am sure there are companies that can do this ... However, just because there is a trial it dosn't meant that anything will change but good to see ISAF taking a look at this. The brief is pretty open - I don't understand why most people think this has to be a twin trap class; that part of the brief is optional ... How many all female crews are sailing twin trap boats right now - probably just a handfull in the UK and almost none anywhere else ... Seems to me the standard 29er would fit the bill well and it's already well proven. Rick |
