i despised the 500 when i tried it out. there seemed so much wrong with it, the plate wouldnt stay down, the leap onto the wire was a pain, the rudder felt wrong, there was quite a lot of friction in the control lines and i just didnt like it. i sailed my freinds laser 3000 once and didnt like that either, there was sooooo much lee helm and the boat didnt seem deep enough to hike from but that was an old seriously beat up boat so i dont know what the new ones are like.
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

Mr Ellis

When we spoke at Burghfield before you test sailed the RS500, I did explain that you were sailing a hand built proptotype that had a different centreboard arrangement and was using a Vareo rudder blade. This was due to the fact that you sailed before the availability of finished production boats. I thought I had made this clear but this explains most of the points you raise here.

Thanks

Riki

I personally am intreiged by the RS500 and wouldn't mind a play in one if the fleet ever grows enough to venture north. It would be an interesting comparison to a 29er im sure.

I can't imagine why anyone in the market for a new boat would chose a V3000 in preference to an RS500.

Remember the MPS / RS700 showdown a year or so back

Maybe we could have a RS500 / Vago / 3000 event once there are a few more 500s and V3000s on the scene, even handicap?

Results could be a bit weather dependent, I guess, but it might spring a few surprises!

Anyone want to put their money where their mouth is?

That sounds like a brilliant idea, why don't the class associations group together and run a few events like a mini circuit mixing the classes? Remember something like that was mentioned with the V3000 and Vago a while back. Still keep the classes individual with their own circuits but have mixed events also. Reckon the only draw back would be influencing the manufacturers to support the idea. Reckon it would work wonders for other classes, as has been previously mentioned, Laser 5k/Boss/Penny 14. Also may sort out a few rivalries such as the 29erXX vs Cherub....

With regard to RS500 PY, we originally recommended 972, but as more boats have begun sailing and we have sailed against other classes more, this recommendation has been reduced to 960. The RS500 shakes off an RS400 relatively easily in all but the lightest breeze (when its still a little quicker), so this number is likely closer than the original estimates. I expect the number to settle around 960 - 965 when there is a good number of sailors using the boats and some decent returns, its not unusual for new owners to take a while to tune the boat to full capacity and the effects of different venues/waterstates are considered. Theres a useful mix of combined weight at the moment from 115kg to 155kg so we'll soon have some more feedback regarding any natural favouring of the weight band.

Do you mean it shakes off a 400 on handicap or on the water because as you probably know a 400 sails off 952 so if its quicker on the water then id expect to see a big cut.

Did LDC ever make a BAD boat? .. out of GRP anyway.

PS: Graemef:  hear you sold your last boat "just in time"!!  Hope the 500 is nice and strong (should be at the weight ).

Ah, I was told it was £4995 for everything apart from the road base, I stand corrected.

That's still a good deal cheaper than any laser and maybe ovi equivalent!
