To make the PROs job easier, the finish line should be outside the course [ we quite often do a little reach to the finish] this puts the responsibilty on the sailors to do the right number of laps then go to the finish. Its amazing how difficult it is to count to five over a period of an hour isn't it. Anyone got any tips on doing that. during one of the 'gaps' in racing at the weekend, we thought of putting a counter on the spinny halyard so that you can see how many hoists you have done! Good weekend though, it would be a shame to dilute it. nice to see all the As. |

Lets be fair the racing was about as dangerous as the drive to get there. On the Motorways that I used there were three incidents where we came close to carnage due to peoples driving atitude. There's the person who pushes in from the slip road, the one who doesn't indicate and the driver who owns the middle lane.

Simon,
What were you sailing at Grafham? I was expecting to see you on the fast course either with your 17 or with your new purple kite. |

Took a Dart 18 out on Staturday and that reminded me while I don't like them. Steering in mud is not my idea of fun!!!! |

So what do you do with the 100 odd boats that want to club race at their club on Sunday? |

markp , much safer on the back of a transporter , feet up and tinny in hand ! sorry couldn't persuade you an sailwave to drink more on saturday , i hear thats why the blade tanned you . as for dandgerous driving , should have seen me n twitchy driving up the river A1M fuelled on red bull after a weekends hard work .never mind twichy the navigator hitting the sports button of the hired pimp mobile when over taking on corners . my only concern on water racing was on the sunday when the two courses overlapped, would have been mighty interesting if the wind had appeared on sunday as forecast , as for sats near misses , you always get interesting near misses and some not so misses when lots of cats race around a course on a windy day , monos too ! , even in single class fleets , with widely differing course depending on whose in a gust , boats flying in on port laylines at leeward marks with water established over parked stbd boats etc results service was shocking for a prestige event , but they did work on improving for the sunday . great weekend all the same shame it was sooo short .
ps Oz man (respect ) Eyes a dwarf next to you albeit i'm 6 foot 2 Think a lot of probs are due to lack of protests , but lifes too short for them. answer ?
100 boats club racing ??? where was that ??

Exactly. I don't recall there being anywhere near 100 club boats racing anyway, although about half the sailing area was set aside for club racing, leading to the two open courses crossing each other on Sunday. Surely if the club wants the event to be successful they could make the sacrifice for one weekend? Perhaps some of them could even get involved in the open to make life easier for race commitees? Just a thought |

Any other club running a major event of even half this magnitude cancels club racing thus allowing a safer and better run event to better promote their club, also with 200 boats paying over 20 squids a go means your club improves it's financial position who wouldn't give up one days sailing to do this especially when your club is about to be hammered financially to provide disabled access in our new politically correct and sensitive era.(I don't know how much wheelchair access will cost but four grand aint a bad start.) Personally I enjoyed the event (not for the first time and will return again next year) Grafham is running a huge event here-getting bigger every year-and obviously lessons in race and club management are being learned, I am sure there will be innovations next year to keep the majority sailing FAST, safe,FAST and happy and FAST.

Believe it or not Grafham is a members club not a yachting institution. The organisation of a big event requires a large number of sailors to give up their sailing. We do not pay ROs as we work on a volunteer principle.Grafham members including me when it is not the Cat Open do not see why hosting an event should preclude them from racing. If it did, then why should any of us turn out to man rescue boats, committee boats , the race office etc. None of these folk are paid! Frankly, the club racers were stuck up by the dam and that is the I am not narrowest part of the lake so it made no difference to the courses. I did not see any serious shunts on the fast cat course this year but we all had near misses. There is a serious problem with visibility on all modern asymetric boats whether cat or monohull and ultimately as one of the contibutors says - it is up to you to keep your eyes open. As Simon says the club will look at the event and learn from the crits but my impression was that most people had a great weekend's sailing and enjoyed being part of a huge event. I know I did.
