Images are of us when we ran aground, bonus points if you can guess the location and class of boat! (Thats the crew you can see, i'm taking the photos!)
Basically through lack of wind we drift with the tide onto the sand bank and spent about 3 hours building sandcastles and generally having a great time, we put the anchor over the bow to hold us as the tide came back in. Theres usually about 4ish knots of tide in this river. (Clue to the location!) Another big clue is in the background of the pics. ![]() ![]() (Ok i know its a keelboat so what, its still very dinghy like!) Edited by RickyP |

Woah! Calm down everybody. Let's put this into perspective. We had had a pretty lame day on the water, the wind had fu(c)ked off for the day, so we decided to jerry rig a stupidly big kite. Were we looking for speed? No. We were looking for power. The water and sky looks deceptive, that was only about a F1-2. And we were easily twinning. No it wasn't very fast. But yes, it was bloody fun! The lee helm was so immense that we had to sail the boat on her ear to keep her in a straight line. The rudder was redundant! And yes, I know we needed a longer mast and longer pole, but it's not exactly the sort of thing i can whip out my toolbox. I do however have the carbon mast and the pole that the rig was designed for, but at the time it was about 600miles away. |

The kite is meant for a mast much bigger than the one that was used as it is the number 2 kite on what is basically a number 3 mast. Think the pole could have been a fair chunk longer too! From the shore it looked like another one of Stu's hot air balloon incidents like his spice kite

Reckon the mast looks too short for the kite, meaning the sail is bagging out to leeward providing a higher sideways force than a forwards driving force or either the boat needs longer foils to provide more lift to counteract the sideways force. Alternatively the boat coud have been sailed further off the wind (than it looks) with an angle where the kite is blown more forward, but where's the fun in that without hotting up to gain more apparent wind.

Fair point Hobbo, it does look quite big and you probably do need some heel to counteract the lee helm. However it's going to be a big compromise, my boat is the same shape (Bistro) and slows down SOOOOO much unless she is dead flat. Look at the quarter wave you are leaving!
Perhaps another indicator that just putting great big sails on a hull that was never designed for them is not nescessarily the key to increased boatspeed!!! ![]() |

So is that what happens with normal 12s? The leeward gunle acts as a big daggerboard?
