My wife has just done a half marathon where the timing for 1500 crazy competitors was done by chip. The result posted the same day to the web.

Does anybody know if this chip timing technology could be applied to a dinghy race? E.g. http://www.sportsystems.co.uk/ChipTiming.aspx I wondered if the detecting antenna could be strung between the pin and an inner marker (submerged by say 6 feet). The chip could be attached to the bow of each boat. Instant race results and accurate timings but I wonder how sensitive it would be for OCS?

Any thoughts?

Kevin

According to this quite accurate but i don't think it could replace the RO looking down the line

Aye- unlike running where they've defined the body part, remember in sailing it's much more wooly- if a boat realises it's too early, and bears off along the line (a mythical line where there's space to do this) but the crew's still hanging over the line, they're OCS.
Or at an upwind finish, if a retractable bowsprit is fully in, then the tip of it crossing the line is the correct finish- but if it's got stuck all the way out, then the finish should be recorded on the bow of the boat (or thereabout)...

I think the OCS issues could be ignored if the system could eliminate all the bloody maths on handicap races! I'd be a bit more willing to be RO in that case.

Can SI's change the definition of starting/finishing to make it the bow rather first part of the boat?

They could standardize the meaning of being over the line/finishing a race - could you make it so that if the foremost part of the boats hull (i.e. the bow point) was over the line...then you are OCS unless you exonerate yourself? Then put the sensor on the bow of each boat.

And the same applies for the finish - the finish is determined when the bow of the boat crosses the line, rather than spinnakers, people, bow sprits etc...

Simple Si amendment to say that you finish when the chip crosses the line from the direction of the last mark!

Perhaps the chip ought to be placed in the transom, otherwise some naughty people might move it back from the bow, and then be able to poke the bow over the start line without triggering the chip.....?

or they could move it forwards to allow them to cross the finish line more easily...

they would have to be visible so the on water judges could check. They would also have to be tamper proof and boat park checks randomly made.

Definetly possible
