Hi all thanks regards to advice about threading Halyards (see thread: "RE-threading a Mast with Halyards "). ... If I'm going to do the job this weekend - may aswell do a good job.... My rather long halyard (for my 8metre mast), is about 16-20 metres long (it is 2-to-1, with a turning block at top of mast)! It's a bit on the long side, but cutting ropes short is one of the few things I am paranoid about. When hoisting, as the sail rises, the halyard seems to throw twists into itself. Any advice regards to straightening out a new halyard/looking after a halyard ? Or/and, should I be using a particular brand of rope? ( I think I have 6mm diameter of something like "Marlow exel pro" (http://www.purplemarine.com/Category.aspx?categoryname=Rope) ). Thanks in advance. /fin.

tie one end up to something. then put a pair of gloves on and run it through your hands, walking backwards as you go. keep tension in the rope as you go backwards. this takes the kink out of the rope. if when hoisting the mainsail it still kinks keep tension on the halyard when hoisting.

6mm!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats quite thick for a halyard, i would of thought you could get away with much thinner rope than that. I use clicky but its only 1 - 1 so not really comparible |
