Tongue slightly in cheek by putting this in the repair and maintenance section, but here goes. I badly twisted my ankle earlier this year playing football and it has been weak ever since. In fact cost me a ski trip and a lot of sailing. It keeps giving and doesn't feel like its got the strength back. In fact I'm probably going to miss sailing this weekend, because it doesn't feel strong enough to hike or trapeze on. Anyone got any ideas of excercises to strengthen it up? Anyone got any top tips for finding a sports therapist or similar? Although I'm reluctant to spend much more money with these unless necessary. I appreciate that I should and will go back to the doctor, but just looking for anyone that may have had a similar problem. Cheers.

Other half badly sprained her ankle this time last year (well did it 31st Oct!!)
Although it took her a while to get walking again, it took longer to repair the muscle. It did put her sailing back. She did have physio, something that if you haven't had, you should go and get cos she was given loads of excercises, if you are interested, pm me rather than me listing it all here!! |

hi i broke my ankle a couple of years back and i was out of the boat for six months even when i got back in the boat i still did not feel quite right but after lots of physio on it it was alot better. the exercise which worked best for me was running on a trampoline which seemed to free up the joint i still struggle some times going upwind in the vareo so i just hike with one leg taking most of the effort. as richard says above go and physio on it they do a great job and it works. |

I broke my ankle about a decade ago. While it takes an age for the break to heal properly it is the muscles that really suffer. One of the best things I found to use is a balance ball like this: And physio - lots of physio. |

An ankle support of some kind to prevent another twist in the meantime.

Ankle support is always a good idea if you are suffering from weakness.
I have a similar thing with one of mine where it randomly just collapse or twists. No pattern to it and no warning signs. I have found getting down the gym and hitting the crosstrainer has helped (lots of movement of the ankel joint and no impact). That followed by doing the required stretches when finished has help a huge amount. Just need to work on core stability now! |

A good sport injury specialist could be the best thing for you. There is a reason all those wealthy football clubs send their players to them when they have injuries. I realise time is a great healer but ankles are difficult as you can't avoid using them during the day. A little specialist help could reduce the recovery time.

See a sports physio (some "health clubs" like John Lloyds or Virgin Leisure have clinics on site). About £30 a session and worth every penny. You might even get it on the NHS if you're very very patient (and/or totally crippled).
It seems like you're paying a lot for something you can usually do at home or in the gym (some massage and exersise) but it gets you focused on the right things instead of bumbling along steadily making things worse. I got joint fatigue in an ankle in my early 20s from ill fitting ski boots. Sufferred repeated and unpredictable sprained ankles for several years till a physio showed me how to put it right. |

MJ is right. A balance ball or wobble board is what you need. You can get one easily on the 'net, usually with a set of suggested exercises. It will strengthen the ankle joint as well as the lower leg which will help the ankle too.
oh and then sell the thing on ebay when you're done! Edited by winging it |
