the Elliott is being "modified" from a 4 person to a 3 person boat (smaller sail plan) and being given a lifting keet so you can get up to 4 in a container. Sorry just read an article on it on another yaching webpage (cough TheDailySail cough) |

Another part of their agenda is to increase the number of women.

Part of the IOC agenda was to reduce the overall number of participants? How many Elliott teams are going to be entered and how many in each team?

That wasn't the point I was arguing. My point was that there is no consistent logic between the two decisions made regarding the Women's 2-person dinghy and keelboat. I'd have liked both changed. Edited by Stefan Lloyd |

Yes it was also a poor choice for fleet racing, but why keep it for match racing when there are better boats for the job?
the america's cup is a totally different case altogether. |

What's the prime class designed as a match-race boat? The IACC. 25 tonnes of lead in the bulb - not exactly fast to accelerate. You'll find plenty that argue that fast acceleration is precisely what you don't want in match racing, because slow accelaration punishes tactical mistakes. As for "layout to allow the crew to perform quick and unpredictable manouvrers properly" - on some IACC boats you have to disconnect the forestay to gybe! I'm not a defender of the Yngling but the arguments you are making are precisely the same as those that made it a poor choice for fleet-racing. Actually you can make a good case that the Yngling is more suitable for match racing than fleet racing.

OK Stefan, you try convincing the IOC to let 16 5 person teams into the games and come back to me about J80s or similar! Ynglings are not good for match racing because of their characteristics - ask yourself what makes a good match racing boat - the yngling does not have these qualities - spinning to quickly, acceleration, layout to allow the crew to perform quick and unpredictable manouvrers properly.....not in a yngling! |

You could say the same about J80s or FC8s or any of several other classes that have been used for match racing. The simple fact is that event organisers use the fleets they can get hold of and there's nothing about the Elliot that makes it especially suited for match racing, nor AFAIK has it been used anywhere outside ANZAC. I'm not particularly complaining about this decision but there is no coherent or consistent rationale behind the choices for the women's keelboat and dinghy. These are entirely political decisions. |
