Hi,
I have just made my brand new Beneteau Oceanis 34 available for some sailing experiences www.sailingelana.com but if this is of any use please contact me to negotiate better prices than those listed for a tailored experience. There is a link to Lake District Boat Club on the site. I am a director and our racing secretary may be able to advise or suggest racers needing crew. Regards, Les. |

Hi All. You my be interested in my small yacht charter venture on Lake Windermere, that I started in 2004 operating out of White Cross Bay Marine. We had a break this this year (06) but are back in 07 with a French Kelt 7.60. We believe we offer 'affordable family' sailing and much more! Our WWW site is neary complete, please have a look and I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. Site address -www.windermereyachts.co.uk

Hehehe... yes, I remember the Squib very well - we had a bet on with the staff at one time that we would capsize her in a gale just north off Bell Isle and we lost - she just did not want to go. We also had a Yeoman at one time but I did not like it quite as much. The Squib just felt much better in a lot of wind, and very early spring was always our preferred time for sailing, when there still was some snow on the mountain tops. Good wind and no traffic. Just wonderful! Now that the kids have grown up we don't get to Windermere all that often any more; instead we have a small day sailer (a German FAM class boat - 18' with lifting centreboard) on Lake Trasimeno in Italy, some 80m south of Florence. Much warmer than the Lakes, of course, plus very friendly people and excellent sailing. But we still love come up to Windermere* every once in a while, and a day sailer for a day or two might just round off the next trip very nicely. Thanks for the update and happy sailing! * approx. 300 mins from North London.... |

Hi Wilf, Yes you are correct this used to be Holidays afloat.. They have moved down on to the Nab where the ferry crosses. 3 nice apartments overlooking the water. They are built on a slope so ground floor entrance but you are one floor up at the front, giving greatt views of the lake... The arrangement is that if you book an apartment the day sailer is free if it is not booked out. I figure that they do not go out much and there will always be one available.. If you are a keen sailor then you will be looking for days when there is a wind and you get more chance of a boat then, than when it is very hot. The boats that they had before were all Squibs and they have gone . a pity because these are my favourite day boats of all time. I learnt to sail on a sqib with the Island Cruising Club in Salcombe before graduating through Solings to larger yachts. I live in Bradford by the way, it takes 100 minutes to get to Bowness Regards Mike |

I realise you asked this question a year ago. Windermere Lake Holidays have 3 Catalina Capri's that you can hire. I was out in one in July it costs £60 for the afternoon. [QUOTE]
Mike, Just a silly question - are these the former Holidays Afloat people? We sailed with them for many years on Windermere and have very happy memories. Would like to charter from them again, and a small appartment plus a day sailer seems to be a good option. for an extended weekend. Do you live 'up there'? Wilf |

I realise you asked this question a year ago. Windermere Lake Holidays have 3 Catalina Capri's that you can hire. I was out in one in July it costs £60 for the afternoon. They are 20ft Trailer Sailors and have an outboard in case you loose the wind. If you want some one to share with you give me a ring if you can stand an agile 74 year old with Coastal Skipper certificate and an ex owner of a Golden Hind. look at www.lakewindermere.net Mike Hoggard |

Hi Villan, I only know of one big boat charterer on Windermere - www.obsailing.co.uk, and they're not exactly cheap, but have nice newish boats (30ft+) and I suppose they cost a lot to run as well and we all have a mortgage to pay....
Don't know of anyone else there, in terms of sailing charter all seems to be a bit under-developed. The local clubs I always found rather 'stand-offish', if that's the correct term for not wanting anything to do with non-local sailors. However, there used to be a good sailing school at Ullswater and I think that they hired out boats as well - perhaps you can find them (and others) via the RYA schools site. Good luck and have fun - it's a lovely place for sailing! Wilf |
