Hi all,

At the Dinghy show this year I noticed one or two clubs had stands. Do you Guys and Gals consider this an effective method for promoting a club or a particular open event??

Thanks

I wouldn't have thought it was a particularly good way of promoting a club (unless it is a club that has an appeal outside of just the local area.  i.e WPNSA.

For me, they just used up valuable dinghy space.

A better way of promoting would be via forums like these - telling us why you think your club is worth joining, is it just for racing etc.   perhaps even a new section for it??

WYC did try this but I don't think it we are going to do this again.

We have an excellent sailing school coupled to the club and that is a great feeder for new members.

As far as I can tell most people who go to the Dinghy Show are already dinghy sailors and members of clubs ...

Depends on the objectives of attending.

If it was a club wanting to promote a multi class summer event then that may be worth while ... but not as a membership drive.

We (Welsh Harp) usually have a few enquiries, people looking to move clubs, or those who sailed a while ago and want to get  back into it with families etc.  I think it's good having clubs there, showing your face as it were. After all, it's the clubs that make up the sailing world, tisn't just about class development.

We (King George) get enough new members from it to make it worth it- and we're the closest club to Ally Pally. There's more Londoners than you would have thought wandering around looking for a club at the show.

If I remember right that the cost of a stand is pretty high so the number of new members also has to be high to justifiy the expence.

However I would have through the best way to get people to join is to get rid of the joining fee, after all if I want a new club or info about a club I look it up on the internet, cheap, easy & with photos.

Another good tip is to get decent membership secretaries that actually respond to enquiries and deal with membership matters in a timely manner - one club I went to was really bad and that ruined any promotion of the club others had done.  I know most are voluntary, but if you don't want to do it...don't volunteer.

The Internet has got to be the cheapest form of advertising (other than word of mouth) these days.  It was certainly my first port of call.

This is true, but others genuinely do want to speak to someone first. One of the unfortunate aspects at King George is that we're rather sealed off from the outside world behind Thames Water's big fence, and whilst the phone will be answered if someone phones from the gate on a club day, the gate itself is a bit off putting- limiting "passing" visitors. The show gives us a chance to get out there and speak to people.

As an aside, club and class stands are a lot cheaper than commercial ones. This is why King George is able to have quite a spacious stand, whilst the "shop" stands tend to be rammed with product.

I'm guessing this means that you can't actually sell anything at the show, you can only advertise and take contact details?
