Hi, Me and my girlfriend want to buy a F16 cat. (We weigh +/- 130 kg). An Stealth F16 looks very fast too, with some new concepts, but I can't find race-results. Does anyone have an idea whick F16 to take ? Regards,
Gill |

Gilo, It might be worth taking a trip to Zandvoort to see several F16s that are based there. They have Taipan 4.9, Stealth and Blade F16s. Also, go to www.formula16.org which is the official class website. This has a brief description of each of the F16 designs currently available and contact details for the builders. The Spitfire is a really sweet boat, but primarily it's a one design class that happens to be close to fitting the F16 formula. As a result it has been offered 'grandfather' status within the class. This means that a Spitfire can race with the F16s although it is not a true F16 (it is heavier, has too large a sail area etc.). There will eventually come a time when it will be inelegible for F16 racing. Are you thinking of buying a new or used boat? Bear in mind that there aren't very many used boats around at present, but I believe there is a Stealth F16 in Holland that is for sale. Edited by Jalani |

Hi Gill,
As John says, probably time for a trip to the Netherlands. There are distributors for both the Stealth F16 and the Blade F16 there (check out the links on http://www.formula16.org/component/option,com_weblinks/catid ,13/Itemid,23/lang,en/) For some results... Stealths 2nd, 4th and 8th on the Colne Point long distance race last weekend: http://www.marconi-sc.org.uk/661D9/East_Coast_Piers_Race/ECP R_2006_Results/Colne_Point_Results_2006.aspx You should note that those Stealths were 1-up, sailing off a handicap of 0.98 against the Shadow's 1.07. It's a fast boat :-) The full East Coast Piers Race was won by a Stealth sailed 2-up a few years back. Also, have a look at the results from the recent Nations Cup: http://www.mumblesyachtclub.co.uk/results/2006/200606_f16.ht m. You'll see some very close racing between two F16 designs there. Paul |

It's a one-off Blade called Agent Orange. For a young chap, you really should start to get concerned about all the things you don't seem to be able to remember! |

Hi, Thanks a lot for your reactions in the first place. @ Jalani: There is indeed a Stealth for sale in Holland. The F16 scene isn't very big in Belgium, so I'm looking for a F16 to compete in the C1 class (almost all F18). I know a Spitfire can compete there, can all the other F16 compete also ? Does anyone have any results of Stealth's compared to F18 or Spitfire ? What do you thing about the T-foil rudders ? Doesn't it slow you down too much, and does it really stabilize the boat ? If I read reviews and comments, a spitfire and Stealth seem the only ones sailed by a 2-headded crew often. So I'll take one of those 2 I guess ... ? Thanks for the info. Regards, Gill |

Gilo, If a Spitfire is competitive then any F16 is more than competitive. I don't know where you'd find results of Spitfire against F16, but from experience the two are very evenly matched although the F16 is rated faster. I suspect that there is a lot more to come from the F16 platform than has so far been found.... My own Stealth has T-foils and there has been much discussion about the pros/cons on the Catsailor forums - www.catsailor.com If you do a search for T-foil you should find several good threads. The short answer though; no, they don't seem to slow you down at all (well maybe in really light winds >5mph), in fact they speed you up - in heavy wave conditions they keep the boat level upwind so no pitching, and downwind they keep the bows up so strongly that you can power much harder than you'd believe possible. All the F16s sail well one or two-up. It is, after all, the central benefit of the class (a Spitfire isn't competitive one-up) and all the deigns handle both modes very well. I'm probably slightly more competitive two up, but that's just me Formula classes are undoubtedly the way forward, and of those, only the F16 can offer an ultra light platform that can be sailed one or two-up! Price wise, they also give an incredible amount of 'bang for your buck'! |

Jalani, Thanks a lot for your information. I found the Spitfire results on their site. They had some good results in the Carnac-race this year, in competition with other F18 cats, which have already proven their qualities to me. I don't really have any experience with other F16 cats in Belgium (execpt Spitfire), that's why I was a little bit suspicious. Gill |

I think there may also be a second hand Blade for sale in the Netherlands - you should speak to Hans Klok at Catamaranparts and try to get a sail on both boats. Paul |
