I wasn't having a pop at symmetric spinnakers.  Undeniably they are quicker for all but the most high performance of high-performance dinghies.  Its just that only die-hard racers would chose to sail one by preference - asymmetrics are just so much easier.  I think in an era of limited attention spans, not many will be bothered to learn the trickier art of traditional spinnaker handling.  Having said that the FBs, Merlins and 505s are all doing quite well at the moment, so maybe its just me that's lazy.

Yes - also a SMOD, though, I think, so doesn't count in the search. I don't think it really counts as what could be done for a modern Symmetric boat either, really, as it was designed to fill such a small area of the market.

MRX is just a Merlin Rocket in drag though.

The main reason that there aren't any new development classes is because we don't really build boats out of wood any more - thus the home made special is a thing of the past. Plus as we become an increasingly time poor society, most of us don't have the time to look after a wooden boat. Plus the development classes we have pretty much cover it.

As for turning everything into a Cherub, well not every water is suitable for a Cherub and frankly, not everyone wants one.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

Maybe.... don't you get bored of dodging the FB's and Scorps a Chew?

Some of it comes down to being lazy, some of it comes down to prefence. Assymetrics are without doubt easier to handle and as such can be sailed with a greater sail area compared to boat size (I wouldn't like to see a symmetric equivalent of a 49er).

Quite - but could the formula rule work with dingies as it does fro cats?

If this could be pulled off under the guidance of the RYA I think we'd have a result.

This would create bigger fleet racing, more competition from manufactures and still give the free thinkers room.

Works for the raft racers why should it not work for monohulls?

I supect that the formula would need to be written round existing popular classes ...

It would also unite the SMODys with the DEVys. I think it's a great idea.

Agreed - perhaps the concept needs a sponsor to give it some credibility.

How about the Y&Y14 ...  (... or what ever length is appropriate)

That would give the initative some sound backing ...

Haven't we been here before?

The rules would have to be pretty tight for a big manufacturer to get involved, otherwise the turnover at the top of the fleet would be too great, so we are talking an old fashioned restricted class like the N12, rather than a development class like the Int Moth, but with modern bits on it. No big(ish) manufacturer ever got involved with the 12, as far as I'm aware, just designed one designs around it (Firefly, Graduate, Lark, RS200) so why would anyone get involved with a new one? I don't see Laser Topper or RS wanting to get into a who's best battle that could see them loosing out to joe bloggs in a home built boat.

Faireys designed and built a series of hot moulded International 14's in the 1950's, but even they put a deck on the MK1 and turned it into a one design called the Gannet, as they realized the expense of keeping up with developments when having to build moulds is prohibitive.

I think Cats are generally a much simpler hull shape, and it is possible to keep competitive for longer by updating the kit, like the Hobie Tiger has.
