Yeah but I'd take everything Top-Gear says with a pinch a salt and see it more as an entertainment program than a car review show. Some cars that Clarkson has slated have turned out to be pretty good. Any review is a rough guide and say you really want to watch a film that has been sl*gged off by the film review in your local paper, are you going to not watch it just because the paper has told you its not good? I wouldn't buy a boat without forming my opinion of it first. I've loved all the boats that I've had over the years but if I just listened to other peoples' opinions on them, I probably wouldn't have sailed them, pretty glad I formed my own opinions.

+1. This is because the BBC don't have any car ads so they can get away with it. Magazines get lots of their money from the adverts in them. Is a magazine going to write a scathing review about a product from a company that spends a lot on ads with them? No. Even if 'Joe bloggs' gets to go and be a tester for a day, he is not the one writing or editing the review. Compare opinions by knowledgeable people who have used a product to mag reviews. The difference is often huge. Magazines are second only to a salesman on commision for objective reviews. |

Many boats have sleeved luff and are able to adjust the jib luff tension in a variety of ways (a jib cunningham being the most common) I suspect they're used because they're cheap and easy to rig, no other reason. |

i quite like the 500s looks. i saw it at the feva nationals and it looked like a proper boat. was that when y+y tested it? and well done to y+y for drawing the comparisson between 800 and 49er and 29er and 500. i think that was very helpful especialy as i am moving out of the feva this year. |

ooops, spotted by Gael before hitting delete
i had responded to the above, seeking 'redress' for the V3000 anyway, the outcome is we're arranging a 'three-way comparitive boat test' between a standard Laser 3000, one fitted out with the new sails and retrofit options, and the V3000 ... maybe sometime in August or early September likely venues are Carsington, Wilsonian (Medway) or Llyme Regis - I know which I'd prefer THANKS CHEW!

In the case of the 29er etc it provides a permanent forestay without having to duplicate it with a second wire up the jib. As having an unsupported mast is unpopular with some folk this could be a markting advantage. I believe the new Tasar rig has moved to the same system so it can have a permanent forestay rather than take the mast down. |

does the 500 have a seperate forestay? i thought it was a wire in the jib with all the blocks hidden by the velcro flap

i agree with BFS ... lough tension hooks the jib and closes the jib leach in light winds ... let off the tension and it opens up the top of the jib and allows it to bend off with the same sheeting position ... but you also want to use rig tension to bend the mast and flatten the main without applying kicker ... so you end up compromising, unless you have separate forestay and halliard ... with a combined forestay and halliard i guess you could use the lough tensioner at the jib tack (where provided) but how many people fiddle around with this? |
