To be Internationaly competitive - 140 to 150......... Good luck (and you'll need more than the right weight to be competitive at International) I raced my T at 75 kg with a 90 kg crew = 165 kg....... Too heavy. I later reached 85 kg and my crew 100 which was not good especialy on the F18. My crew is now back to 90 hoping to get to 85. Myself 78 and hoping to get under 70 but will be just skin and bones. It would get us down to 155 kg though. |

I am just under 16 stone and my crew reckons he is 13. I just can't seem to get him anywhere near a set of scales. We are never going to set the international stage alight, but we do ok Nationally. We came sixth at Weston which was our third Tornado event and about the fifth time we have sailed the boat. For info we have sailed hurricane 5.9's together for about 7 years, so our crew work is pretty good. We finished the TT series in the top five for the last 4 years I think and have won a few open meetings. We are trying to lose weight because we want to do some more European stuff next year. Try to find someone you can sail with, weight you can deal with, personality is more tricky |

I could get down to 90kg at a push i guess thats the disadvantege of being 6.6ft tall. In light winds is where i suffer because weight is everything then but as soon as the wind picks up we are away. Is the Tornado sensitive to rig tention and spreader rake ect? And can you adjust it for heaver crews? Cheers, |

jon, there ain't no such thing as a cat that 'takes' weight. you gotta be down to class min weight if you are to compete. Adjustment for heavier crew does not exist, only adjustment for light crew! I am 90kg and therefore have a very overworked 58kg F18 crew! you need about the same all up weight on a T but its better to have the power[weight] in the crew. Bring back Formula 20 and let the fatties do some helming! [160kg class min weight]

Agree Paul, perhaps time to switch Helm for crew. Never really did understand the "helm is in charge" thing anyway; always a team effort and the crew usually had a better idea of what was going on anyway as I was usually concentrating on waves / shifts / making the boat go fast upwind and then they were driving downwind with the kite. |

So what killed off the F20 class? I would have suited the F20 better but went for the F18 as the F20 class seemed to be dying out (look at nationals attendsance etc).

the fact alot of the helms had to carry lead might have had something to do with it!

To make matters worse for fatties in cats , the SCHRS handicap formula rates you at 75 kgs a person !!!!!!!, so fatties at 110 kgs plus (they are out there !) are at a disadvantage before they even start .10kgs is about 1 percent on handicap .
Then you get light b*ggers who are less than 75kgs each getting an advantage on their rated weight . seems a shame a formula that takes weight into account doesn't address this.
It never pays to be overweight in a cat with modern rigs etc .

But how would you address it ? Get everyone to hop on the scales before the start of a regatta so they can have their own personal Hcap for that event. Would be a nightmare to administer !
