Nah, he must be sailing a Laser: in another thread not so long ago, we were told you can't tune a Laser. (don't ask me, I don't know, I'm not musical)

Yeah stop hijacking my thread!
I think most development classes would reject olympic selection nowadays, Just look at all the hastle the europes got about their 'development' and think about what would happen in an open rules class. It would drive the class well out of the reach of ordinary sailors and probibly limit the competition to the countries with the most funding |

I must protest! This thread is being hijacked by serious debate!! Come on, it started as a lightweight exchange of inconsequential chit-chat and it gets invaded by yet another version of SMOD vs development! Please!! Going back to the original topic, here's one of my favourite - I use it a lot on MSN: |

The SMOD VS Development classses argument is pointless...... I would be sailing my boat irrespective of which category it falls under, I choose my boats because they are really what I want to sail.

The problem with putting an all out development class in the olympics would be the sheer amount of money spent. People would end up having several differtent hulls and masses of rigs and having to pick them for each event dependant on prevailing conditions. It would ruin the appeal of a development class for the ordinary sailor. |

Yeah i suppose off the water skill is important too. Hey do you
think a restricted class could become an olympic class. Cherubs
(or Southern Hemisphere equivalents) in the olympics? Would it
work?

Gives you something to hide behind when you loose though- Andy Rice has said some interesting stuff about that in his coloumn. Personally I think SMOD's give a truer reflection of the better sailor, but I suppose it depends on whether tuning is a part of sailing skill |

Development classes tend to work on the ethos that its not only
performance on the water that counts, but also performance off the
water. Setting up the boat, and in some cases designing and building it
is all part of the challenge and as such when someone wins 'because of
a better boat' as you suggest, it is often a better boat because the
winner has spent many hours making it that way, aswell as sailing it
well.
In some classes people buy the best kit available without depeloping it themselves which leads to a certain level of 'cheaquebook sailing' but even when this is the case it still takes many hours on the water to tune all the new kit so its not as simple as those with the biggest wallets will win regardless of skill. |
