Can we just cancel ALL sporting interviews? There is never anything new to say, just the same old phrases about people doing their best, the crowd was great, the conditions were tricky... No matter whether it's football, athletics or sailing!

Me thinks someone is causing trouble here. This is a Yachting, not an armed forces forum and I note the two pro forces posters have 7 and 2 posts respectively.

Not really contributing a lot are they.

Someone signs up for the forces they know the risks - no one made them sign up, they weren't conscripted..........

Lets cancel every football victory parade, every open-top bus ride for cricketers.

Or, more sensibly, lets not even try to equate the two, becuase everyone just ends up looking like idiots.

I think you've got your values scued mate... I'm sure The Sun website has a facility for low-end social commentary.

Winning Gold in an Olympics is something worth celebrating; however killing and dieing to gain global political advantage, whether under the auspices of counter-terrorism or not, isn't I'm afraid....  the two are unrelated and an utterly preposterous analogy.

It's you with skewed values, someone who wins a few races sailing dinghies does not qualify as a hero!

Someone who is prepared to put their life on the line so that others don't have to is, in my book, a hero.  If the people we have in our armed forces didn't volunteer, then people like you may be conscripted and would have to go to the dreadful places that our heros are sent to.  Leave the politics out of it.

Not really the place for this type of debate.  However, I'm sure that comment would be pretty insulting to those people just doing their jobs.  They don't have any political powers and don't get to decide.  I for one respect what they are doing, but resent the politicians for sending them there.

Anyway, on a lighter note fair play to all the Olympians - after all that pressure I'm sure they were glad to be back home celebrating with their friends and taking some well deserved time off.  No harm in saying it and I'm not sure why people should get offended by that?!?!?!

Lets not start a values debate but reflect on this  that because of those you scorn we can have this debate openly.

I think it might refer to an interview with Ben Ainslie, a BBC reporter asked him, rather excitedly, what he was going to do when he got home from Qingdao and sounded a bit 'put-out' when Ben said that he'd been a way from home for three months and really just wanted to catch up with friends and family at home. ( ....that might not be the exact words but it was something along those lines)
