You're just saying that cos I'm leaving Chew aren't you Ginger  I might get a 6 or 700 if I can't find any crew but I'd prefer a double hander, there's someone else to blame when it all goes wrong!

There's a lot of new people coming into the 700 this year.

Attendance at the opens, Eurocup etc all up by ~50% over last year.  In fact the only quiet event was the Nationals, which is the only one anyone surveys .

If you need to shout at somebody, I find having a split personality really helps, but try to rememeber to talk under your breath or people start looking....

In reality the great thing is that you don't need to make any excuses after races for your mistakes, most people think you're superhuman for sailing one in the first place

Sounds like the standing joke at my old school - there's no I in team but 2 in sailing team! Can sometimes explain a lot of things  How difficult are the 700s to sail? I've not helmed on the wire before! (well, once when it was really light on a Dart 16 - not sure that counts though!)
Ed, are those your excuses when you're in the topper?!

No,  I didn't do a lot of travelling at the beginnnig of the year so I missed Chew and the Winter Champs at Hayling.

I moved out of the Laser into the 700 and am just starting to compete at the opens after ~12 months.  The boat is without doubt a challenge, and it would be wrong to think you can step straight into it and immediately do well, particularly if you have no asymetric or trapezing experience.  However if you are a fairly good club sailor and are willing to put the time in, she really is an achievable challenge.

In the mean time you get to blast around at high speed with a big grin on your face and having loads of fun .

Chew has quite a few 700's so if you are interested have a talk with some of the guys over there.

Cheers

Ian

Cheers Ian, I'm not even a club sailor yet though! I've only done one club race! I have been team racing for 5 years though, and doing plenty of other sailing so I try and kid myself I know what I'm doing I've got a friend with a 600 and I'd love to have a 700, I'm just not sure whether to go single or double handed. I prefer sailing double handed, but I don't have a crew yet..

Team racing counts - it was some of the closest and best racing I ever did and you certainly learnt how to sail properly.

The trouble with double handers is that you have to find someone compatable: who is the right size, has a similar sense of humour, is willing to put the same time and effort in and who has the same aspirations!  No wonder there are so many single handers around these days.

Good luck and good sailing!

Ian

Yeah, I have got a pretty good idea of what I'm doing, I've taught trapezing and spinnakers and done a fair bit before. Definitely agree with you about crew - I do know some people who meet the things you've put down, they're just all in the wrong place! It is a big argument for getting a single hander.
