From what I've heard, the RS-800 isn't too much more difficult to sail
than the 4000, some people even say its easier. The sheet loads are
meant to be lower & twin stringing, you've got more leverage to
keep her upright. The 800 is well designed, utilises her sail area well
and is a really quick boat. In comparision to other skiffs, her sail
area is smallish, but she is one of the fastest. If you can afford to
get a boat with a lot of sails maybe go for an 800 because if your
ultimate aim is to get into twin wire boats, she'd be the perfect
introduction and you wouldn't have to sell a single wire boat later on
to achieve your goal.

Yeah, I think I might go for the 4000 and get a bit more practice on an
assymetric boat, as it's a one design boat it means less decisions!
When I know a bit more about the boats I'll get myself a Cherub, see
what happens really. I need to try a few boats out I think, not sure
where to do that at the moment. I'd like to know if I can cope with a
twin wire boat, that's ultimately what I want to get into.

4000 or Cherub seem the best bet. Wouldn't suggest the 5000, really
heavy and powerful and would be a bit of handful if you're not used to
trapezing, plus have a massive kite which you have to put into a bag
instead of having a spinnaker chute.

Down at chew there are quite a few Laser 4000's and a couple which race on sundays. Might be worth asking them if you can go out for a quick spin

Well the cheaper option is the 4000, there are plenty around at £2500 but all these high performance boats go through rope and blocks faster then your ordinary boats and as for sails the 4000 might be the most expensive. The hulls are tough and with a bit of care you can keep the stick in the boat. For real bargain basement high performance then you have to consider classes which are on the way out and I'd put the 5000 and the Boss in that bracket. I'm sure they are tremendous fun and they cost very little until you need new sails or break something. I think all the twin trapeze boats need a regular crew and regular sailing to keep the technique up to scratch - quite honestly so too does the 4000 if you are going to be the slightest bit competitive. You need a partner to spread the cost and develop your technique together, none of these boats can be sailed with a crew who doesn't know what his doing. These are all high performance boats and not easily sailed and they are never going to be cheap. They are quite different from a 420 not just faster versions of the same sort of thing. The other thing to remember if you are sailing inland is that they don't go very well until the breeze is up - but when the breeze is up do they go! |

5000's aint nices boats from what i've herd hence they're not made
anymore and are apparantly awful to sail, but u would be fine in an 800 coz of the equilisation system (weedier you are, further the racks move out). Would def consider an 800, even if you share wid some1, like a prospective crew. They're also relatively 'forgiving' boats unlike the 29er in comparison. If you want a cheap playaround about £4250 may be swung for some of the older boats, but for a competitive one would have to spend upwards of £6000/£6500. ![]() |

The youth means it's sailed in the youth squad. @ those weights u mentioned...ur perfect for a 4k or a cherub! Not had any experience of the 5k, would imagine it's just like sailing a bigger 4k tho... Kasey. |

Thanks a lot for the replies. I'm still trying to figure out if this is
feasible - getting down to Chew's gonna be interesting without a car -
so those boats were just ones I thought of. The 4000 sounds good at the
moment, though what does youth mean with regards to boats? I'm 11 1/2
stone normally (was a month ago - dropped a stone in a month though!),
with a similar sized crew would the 29er be underpowered? Without
trying to sound too bigheaded I reckon I could probably cope with the
800 with a decent crew, but I've just had a look at prices and they're
out of my league at the prices I've seen so far. A guy I met a while
ago was suggesting the 5000 - any views on them? I know they're not
made anymore, does that mean they've depreciated? Cheers again
