I have just bought a cheap dinghy and was wondering do I really need insurance either for my own risk or for legal reasons?  As a first time owner I don't know what's required or suggested.

Noble Marine would pay for replacement kit if it was stolen, assuming that you had taken reasonable steps to secure the equipment.  We would consider reasonable steps to include

  • Hiding the equipment, out of sight underneath a boat cover
  • locking it in your car
  • Placing the equipment out of sight in a tent.
  • removing it and taking it home with you

It is difficult to answer whether you should claim from the car, house or boat insurance, as all policies have different levels of cover and exclusions.  For instance, some house or car policies may exclude sports equipment or may exclude items which are covered by a second policy.

All I can say, is that the equipment would be covered by a comprehensive policy from Noble Marine, assuming you had taken steps to secure the equipment (as above).

what happens if your sails etc are in your car and your car is either stollen or your kit taken from your car? do you claim from car ins or boat!

What if camping and sails etc taken from pitch!

This is a good example of why you should always check the policy wording carefully as not all policies offer the same level of cover.

Have a look at Noble Marine's Guide to Insuring your Dinghy which should explain some common insurance terms and highlight some of the differences between insurance policies.

Noble do not let you pay monthly. That's why I went with craftinsure.

I've complained about the price of my insurance in the past, but in retrospective it's probably fair. I wouldn't change from Noble just because I'm really happy with the service they provide, always are able to sort things out really quickly and all the other companies seem in a league below them.

Mark has built a new forum for Insurance-type-topics.  Why not dig the photos out and post them?

i was at leigh that day. it was a hell of a squall came through. i was in the red scorp with the welsh dragon spinni dont know if you would reconise it?

Yeah was bleedin awfull pulled a dodgy gybe at the bottom mark(not going fast enough) went over and that was it stuck in the mud!Had two of us on the board (about 30 stone!) and the wind was so strong just couldn't get it to budge .Poor boat spent the night in the lake got some pictures somewhere !
