The Splash, Comet and Byte were all a smaller version of the Laser, however non were competing with the laser in production numbers. I think the byte has more hulls out there but has since been dropped by Topper.

Splash is not really a laser clone. More of a Europe without the very low boom issues. In terms of numbers or at least circuit numbers in the UK it isn't big because of no RYA support if you look abroad it is a different story. Rivaling Optimist numbers at events. It is a ISAF International youth boat. clicky |

I've seen a few splashes at some Norfolk clubs (Oulton Boad springs to mind) and them seem excellent well sorted little boats and absolute banditos on handicap.

Being on the slightly smaller end of the scale for the radial, I choose the byte. Personally, I found it a nicer boat to sail than the radial. However, the byte is going to have a hard job contending with the laser market, most boats would. But with the byte being chosen as the youth Olympic boat, it should [hopefully] give the byte a huge boast.
Yes, the C11 is a far nicer boat to sail than the standard rig. Depowers well in strong winds and quick in light winds. |

What other options were there for the singlehanders for the youth Olympics? [edit: I mean as in what was on the shortlist, not what would have been suitable!] Great that the CII was chosen, but a little surprising given that the Laser and Radial are Olympic classes and the Radial and 4.7 accepted youth boats in oodles of countries? The RYA and IOC do keep several classes alive well beyond their natural. If the RYA didn't put yoofs in toppers or oppies who on earth would buy one - but there are thousands out there. The 29er should have killed off the hobie 405 and the 420 the day it was launched, but it's only since the RYA adopted the 29er that 420's have really started to fade. .. and 470s? Why oh why, when the fireball and several similarly sized asymetrics exist? So great news for the byte - which does look splendid with it's (expensive) carbon Bethwaite rig. Doubtless sales will multiply and parental bank accounts will crumble! |

Controversial comment that I've probably made before but I reckon my first Topper may well have been my favourite ever boat. I bet there are a lot of people out there that would say the same thing... Pretty sure the Topper got supported by the RYA etc. because of the number of people already sailing them, not the other way round. |

I imagine because there are 470s all round the world in all sorts of countries that have never ever seen a Fireball or an asymmetric boat. The UK dinghy scene is very different from most places. The 470 is next to the Laser about the most popular class with the second and third world nations in ISAF. There are far more 470s in a lot of these "small" countries than there have ever been in the UK... I may not like either boat, but in many places the 420 and the 470 are the basis of their two handed racing scene. Who am I to tell them they're wrong? Edited by JimC |
