ouch!! At least they got to your boat!!

We were watching some laser sailing at Farmoor this weekend and the safety cover was appaling............

One of the Lasers death rolled and the guy fell out. The boat went screaming off downwind on its side and flipped a few times, about 4mins after he fell out it crashed into the sides with him still floating somewhere out in the middle. Only then did the rib go out to pick him up and get the boat off the wall (they casually sauntered over to the rib - hardly rushing). If it wasn't for a few members of public it would have been smashed but they reduced the damage by trying to hold it off the rocks.

A lot of the 600 sailors that were there will agree that it was awful and didn't exactly fill us with confidence!!

Rant over!!

I've got told that Craft insure are good when I bought my 600 as its sort of a family run business?! not sure about that last bit but they seem well priced and i haven't had to deal with them yet!! *Touches wood*

Although, Splosh went for Noble as the price wasn't much different to Craft insure (it was about 150 quid different when i tried for my boat ) but has anybody had any experiances with Craft insure? And would it be worth changing over to Noble when my renewal comes around as everybody seems to love Noble at the moment?

hmm, the safety cover at Oxford (Farmoor) is supposed to be run by members with at least Powerboat level 2 or above, so should be better than at most clubs - at least that's the theory.

I am guessing that this incident took place over lunch time?  The usual arrangement there is that safety cover is only provided during racing, and that at all other times boats provide cover for themselves according to the 'two boat rule' which is common at many clubs.  It has to be said though, that conditions on Sunday were far from typical.

On the one hand you could argue that every sailor going out has to judge for him/herself whether or not they can handle the conditions - clearly the laser sailor over estimated his ability (if you look here you will see that windspeeds reached up to 35mph at Farmoor yesterday lunchtime) - and it could be said that that sailors choosing to go out in such extreme conditions do so at their own risk - they do not have the right to expect safety cover.

On the other hand, it could be argued that during such conditions the safety crew should be prepared to stay on the water and provide cover if there are boats still out sailing.

No doubt there will be many different opinions on this, but I will be passing on this comment to the person in charge of safety cover at OSC and will inform the forum of any reply.

What a load of rubbish, it is the decision of the officer of the day and or race officer as to whether racing or sailing should be allowed.  Unless they have closed the water and stated that you sail at your own risk then yes safety cover should be available.  It is also fair to say that the laser sailor may be more then capable of sailing in those wind strengths but accidents do happen, even at light wind strengths.  The fact that there was a 600 open on makes it even worse, the club has invited sailors to use there facilities and no doubt they charged the entrants and there members therefore they should provide adequate safety cover for all those using their facilities.

So they have every right to expect adequate safety cover.

Not Really, this was the Sunday and the Open day was the Saturday.

I think it was far from him over estimating his ability, as they had just completed the race and were coping very well. The rib had literally just been moored up when he went over (as the incident was within about 15 mins of the finish) and within 10secs it was obvious that he was never going to catch the drifting boat.

One of the 600 sailors said that if it was his club he would have been furious with them because they had just been on the water and the water wasn't closed to the dinghies (it was closed in the afternoon). In total from the capsize to the rib leaving shore it was atleast 5mins and by this time the boat had been on the wall for quite a while. Its not even as if he capsized a long way from the club, he was just the other side of the tower so everybody on the shore could see it, hence why the public tried to catch the boat.

Btw we werent on the water that day as it was a training day.

BUT we had been offered Picos to continue the training so obviously it was considered safe to sail or they wouldn't have offered use of their club boats.

According to the club website it was open day on Saturday and Sunday, but even so, it was "open" to 600 sailors.

Cheers

As I said, I've relayed the comment to the person at Oxford who is responsible, it's down to them to reply.

@ Merlinboy.  Please remember, what I posted isn't necessarily my view, I'm just trying to post both sides.  With regard to 'what a load of rubbish...' though, I think you'll find that almost every set of SIs and club by laws will state sailors sail at their own risk and must assess their own ability to cope with the conditions.  This follows a notorious topper nationals where a set of parents tried to sue a Race Officer/club, holding them responsible for the fact their offspring went afloat in conditions that were beyond their capability.  Thankfully, the parents lost, otherwise the insurance premiums that would be levied on regattas to offset such litigation would make regatta hosting prohibitively expensive.

I chose not to go to Oxford to sail my contender on Sunday because I knew it would be windy and did not want to risk breaking gear.  Instead I went elsewhere and sailed guess what - a  club pico.  Much more  manageable than a single handed trapeze dinghy in that weather, much less expensive and much safer.  Clearly the club did want you to get something out of the weekend otherwise they would not have lent you the boats.

At our club we have a notice to say you sail at your own risk and the skipper makes the decision on whether to sail or race. Safety cover is only provided during club organised activities only.

As far as not rescuing the boat goes - tough luck to the boat I say. The safety crews emphasis is to protect life and not property.
