Hi, My 600 still has a old style boom on it and i struggle to pull enough cunni on because it can't pass through the boom when eased/off (like on the newer style ones). Does anyone have one lying around and willing to part with? If not, would it be wise to cut the gap bigger on mine? I doubt it, because it doesn't look as reinforced as the new ones, and would probably not be covered under insurance if i do. Any help? Thanks, Mark. |

Mark,
I dont understand why you have a problem with your boom. My 600 had the old boom and I never had any problems. When you tie the end of the cunningham off on the boom (knot in the slot), then with the cunningham let right off in the cleats the block should be just inside the bottom of the boom jaws. This should give you just enough travel to get the tack down far enough in the windy stuff. Alternatively have a lightwind knot and a windy knot. If its good and breezy you wont be letting the cunningham off that much anyway. Paul |

why not just rig it outside the boom then? im sure you only want to let it right off in the lighter stuff so the extra friction pulling it on shouldnt be a problem. or am i missing something here?

going outside the boom means going right around 2 bloody great jaws the get bolted onto the mast. this would shred the block as it went past the jaws. Im not sure what the problem with the old boom is, i have a spare old boom that has hairline cracks around the rivets where the mainsheet blocks are tied to so i dont use it, but the jaws on that seem to be pretty much the same as on my new boom. |

but only by the thickness of the walls of the boom and the jaws, 20mm tops.

Buy a smaller block that passes through the gap. Or, rig it up outside the boom a la Laser in higher winds. I've done the latter and there's no problem

I've just remembered that the gap is smaller because there is less space between the back of the mast and the front of the boom.
