For a Laser 2 I've got to agree that you'd be mad to try racing singlehanded. Daggerboard no different to a Laser 1. Jib furls easily. Kite easy to hoist and drop. One rope does the kite and bowsprit. Helming on the wire is stable. Makes you wonder what a crew is for. I've suggested only one mod which isn't class legal. http://www.writinginthesky.net/buzz and click on "rigging". I'm about 13 stone 4 and I'm OK to GREAT in everything up to force 4 (easier inland because of flatter water). Edited by dougabrams |

Looks like we've done similar mods. Looped sheets & extendable tiller extension certainly help. I'd like to get the sail controls back to the helm - but it needs a spider web of rope or blocks expensively and damagingly screwed all over the hull. A compromise is to tie the (now 6:1) kicker line to the trap hooks, contender style (you could knot yours to the main sheet). Outhaul I haven't sorted except to run it through a block tied to the mast and then back along the boom to an elastic - can be adjusted while unhooked during a tack - just about. The cunningham I rarely use anyway. I have yet to try running the main sheet straight off the boom, like a 29er - but it does have advantages. May try your trap hook position tweak, though on the L2 the best single handed position is pretty far forwards - which, unlike the Buzz is about the only place you can easily step out. As you say - most fun around F4. F5-6 and my 12stone struggles to keep it flat, or even upright (straight legs & back might help!!) Keep up the good work and you may convince me to trade up to a Buzz. |

More panic-struck than boring. Rather be on the edge than crewing a tub - but if anyone wants a crew for their RS800 or twin wire cherub .......... |

well i like how single handers are so susceptable to your avtions- i must say when i went sailing in my byte yesturday with mylike hmm 15 stone dad all crammed in- tacking became very lazy instead we just swapped over who was helming and the other just sat there. but not all like 2 ppl or more boats r tubs- ok so things like mirrors and wayfarers r but they all serve there purpose

Well done NickA, You're the first to get pics of singlehanding a 2-up on the wire here. Do you ever have a go with the kite? I sail with the Buzz kite loads on my own (simple to hoist and drop), but I've only used it on the trapeze twice (both in very steady force 3 on the sea). The Buzz has 17.4 square metres of spinnaker, but as its assymetric it behaves kinder across the wind than a symmetric spin. On the plane everything becomes more stable, just lots of blasting.

yeah it is. Last time I was single handing a Laser
two, reaching on the wire with the spinny up, I was hit my a gust (had the main cleated) and ended up landing in the main - with the spinny through the spreaders and filled with water ![]() minutes to sort out the mess... |
