I agree most pole kite boats have small kites because they have silly short poles way up the mast and low hoist heights, but neither of those are compulsory. The pre asymettric 18s had as much rag as anyone could want:-)

Most symetric kited dinghies don't have mast head spinnies so the size will always be less.

However, its a bit much to generalise on all assymetric boats having bigger kites than their symetric counterparts, compare the L4000 and 505 (very similar PY).

If you want a reasonable comparisson loom at the relative sail areas and hull sizes etc. of the flying dutchman and B14 as they have the exact same PY (whether or not that is acurate is another argument entirely but its as good a comparison between the two design philosophies as any, not that its that important).

B14's are a pain in very light winds (less than a 2), crew tacking infront of the mast, boat stops if you put a foot wrong

A dutchman will cope with chop and swell a lot better, longer waterline length, heavier etc, and will carry a lot more weight, and will leave the 14 for dead upwind.

It was the olympic class for many years for good reason, excellent handling, awsome performance, very athletic to sail.

I don't think either one is better, both have their strength and weakness and appeal to different type and sizes of sailors.

P.s.i'm not biased, I own a b14!

Modern = good?

The majority of "modern" classes have fallen by the wayside, dropped by manufactures when something more fashionable comes along.

Anyway skiffs aren't particulary modern, skiffs (A flatbottom open boat of shallow draft, having a pointed bow and a square stern) have been around for years, mainly in australia, due to less dominance of established classes, and the embracement of lighter boat building techniques in the 40's and 50's
