On boats that go relatively slowly downwind symetrical kites are vastly superior.  BUT if the boat can go fast enough an assymetric kite is what you need.

SO RS200's would probably be better off with symetrical kites...but it would be a bit daft putting one on an RS800.

In the early days of asymmettric kites on Cherubs we didn't find much straight line speed difference. However being overtaken by three boats on every gybe rather encouraged the conversion anyway. Its difficult to make a true comparison because boats with asymmettric kites tend to have far bigger kites anyway. When the Cherub changed it was considered essential to make the asymmettrics far bigger because otherwise we were told by sailmakers they wouldn't have worked. Even with pole kites at least some people would gybe downwind in a breeze.

However having said that in any sail you need the fullness at the front rather than the back, and that's rather difficult to do with a symmettric sail. I also suspect that those erly asymmettric kites were just a lousy shape - no-one in the UK knewhow to cut them yet!
