If you have any info on people sailing the Buzz singlehanded, please email me at dougabrams@gmail.com. I'm trying to put together a website of information for those who like a challenge but don't want to go for a Musto Skiff or RS 700.

Many thanks,

Doug Abrams Buzz 520

A good idea.  I've often wondered what I'd sail if I didn't have a crew and the 4000.  I've tried the RS600 but its a bit tippy and wonder if I'd ever have the time to master it.  The 29er is a possibility for a 90kg person such as myself but possibly still a bit of a handfull.  The Buzz does seem a possibility and probably not an expensive one, but I notice there are no photos of you wiring.  One problem - it doesn't have a self tacking jib but on the other hand if you can keep it moving in a blow by just sitting on the side it would give you time to get the jib in before going out.

One other thing.  I've enjoyed sailing the 4000 singlehanded on a few occasions but it is very difficult to right single handed - what's the buzz like?

The Buzz is easy to right after capsize. I weigh 80kg (ish) and I can get on up onto the daggerboard. Lean back with a jib sheet and she's up. Just climb in as she comes up.

Capsizing with the spinnaker up is no problem.
From the daggerboard you can reach in to uncleat.
Then get the kite down and right the boat.

PS www.writinginthesky.net/buzz doesn't have pics of me on a trapeze because I didn't have any hands free for the camera. Seriously though, I'll try and get some on there soon...

The 29er has battens in the jib. The Buzz is kinder, allowing you to furl if you are over-powered.

I used to sail a cherub single handed - this was a fully battened main and jib and mast head kite! No self tacker - it was fine upwind, but wire to wire gybing with the kite up was a bit of a handfull - generally jus cleated the main, played the kite - and when gybing - let off the jib completly, gybe - then put it back on on the new tack!

At uni we have many laser 2's at our disposal and as you are probably aware, they aren't the most exciting of boats to sail! We set up a system for the main sheet which does away with the bridle by just having a second block on the boom in the middle and then running it straight off the boom 49er/cherub style (beware as in high wind the booms have a habit of folding up!) . We bodged up some long tiller extensions just using some old tube so that it can swing round behind. The result is good fun in lightish wind as you are able to get on the plane much sooner and using the symetrical spinnaker is a proper challenge! Definetly something to persavere with as you are guaranteed to get wet first time but you soon pick up the technique. Gybing isn't the quickest thing in the world but it makes the gybe mark interesting when there are a few singlehanders out there! (carnage as no one is properly in control!)
