I would say that rigging on a brand new 14 is around 25kg. If Cherubs are sailing at around 70kg all up (20 kg of rigging) you would think that 14 generally having more of everything (speed is debatable  ) would be a heavier rig. Bigger kites mean a stronger pole is needed, taller masts, more sail area means stronger=heavier masts, bigger boats need longer lines and sheets, bigger sails weigh more etc. I think you'll be doing pretty well if a your 14 weighs 90kg .

Is the pole not weighed with the Hull?

I shall rephrase...

The pole is part of the hull weight.

Rule 9 Weight
(a) The hull in dry condition shall weigh not less than 74.25kgs. From the 1st June 2011, the minimum weight shall be 72kg. From the 1st June 2013, the minimum weight shall be 70kg. The hull shall include essential fittings (as defined below), buoyancy apparatus (whether moveable or fixed), spinnaker boom and controls directly connected for the purposes of launching or retraction of the spinnaker boom, and correctors, but exclude the mast, boom, rudder, centreboard, lines, sails and all other gear.
Essential fittings are defined as:
(i) Any fittings that are permanently bolted, glued or screwed to the hull.
(ii) Any fittings attached to the hull, that are included in another hull measurement rule. Such fittings include, but are not limited to, footloops, non-skid materials and materials covering the foredeck area attached to, and between the gunwales.
(iii) All components of an assembly that is used to support the mast at a point no higher than the top of the lower band defined in Rule 15(c)(i).
(b) If the hull is found to be underweight, lead correctors shall be added. No other inside ballast shall be carried. Neither any essential fixed fittings nor any correctors shall be removed or altered without the boat being re-weighed by an Official Measurer, and the revised weight being recorded on the Measurement Certificate. The weight of any correctors shall be stated on the Measurement Certificate. Correctors may not be moved during an event.

All up 49er is about 95kg, hull weight about 75 I think (can't remember exactly!). Will be lighter with carbon rig. So might be able to only have 15 or so on a 14!

edit: Actually come to think of it that 95kg sounds a bit light, must have got that wrong, will check

Minimum hull weight on a i14 at the minute is 78kg i know this as chris turner was showing me his new 14 being built, that weight includes all blocks and fittings attached to the boat, so i would say 12kg for rig and sails and ropes would be about right.

does it matter weight is only a number do we want boats to be like models skinny and underwight i think not i like curves

Carbon rig will take a big chunk out of that...

Here's the Cherub rule for completeness...

4.1.7 Weight - The weight of the hull in dry condition shall not be less than 50kg. The weight
shall include all permanently fixed fittings and bowsprit, but shall exclude sails, spars,
standing rigging, centreboard, rudder and other loose gear.

Sorry to restart an old thread but does anybody know what the first RS800 with the new style deck layout was? I know that 1120 ish boats have the new deck, but I'm sure I have seen a video of sail no. 800 with its new layout? Any help would be much appreciated, cheers  Smile

Pretty sure it was 1118 or 1119, I believe. Very close to those numbers anyway. The sail you saw most likely wasn't the sail number of the actual boat.

p.s no relation at all, but a 49er hull has never been 70kgs. Bare 49er minimum weight is around 94kgs. edit* just re-read, I meant with wings and fittings.

Cheers, that would make sense, possibly an advertising boat given the number...now to try to find one newer than that at a price I can afford!
