Bethwaite points out that a gybing board means that the hull runs straight, putting the rudder into the wake of the board, increasing its skin friction drag. Add that to the handling complications and the fact that you need to lose most of the added incidence off the wind, and it makes the gybing board questionable to say the least. |

Gybing Boards - Five Os tried them years ago and found them particularly poor in waves as they tended to switch back and forth as the pressure came on and off. The theory is good but I'm not sure you see much real world difference probably because you lose a little bit of rigidity. A good discussion about the 800, it is a good boat. This sl*gging off other peoples classes is a pain, all classes have good points (and bad) and its good to compare them. The 800s only weak point is that such competence can seem a little boring whereas an Internationa 14 is full of faults, but what a ride! When I say boring I am talking relatively. |

Thre's a really excellent explanation of gybong board physics at the link below, by American aerodynmics expert Tom Speer. http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5783&h ighlight=gybing+board |

Without wanting to second guess Redbacks mind, the beam measurement point is further forward than ideal, leading to hulls that are fairly blunt bowed/stocky. Some would also argue they are too short for the amount of sail they carry (hence the development of the T-foil). Still a great class though.

It sounds as though Redback's been for ever traumatised by Alex's boat handling...

![]() AFAIK t-foils are purely to push the arse out the water.
This has a "pushing the nose down" effect that is compensated by your
boat trim (move further back to compensate and "load up" the foil.
This effectively reduces the weight of the boat while sailing and promotes
planing earlier. Down wind it has the added bonus of stabilizing the boat when
it's honking. |

If you can't carry it, don't sail it! |
