I dont know how you have fitted all this competitive sailing in Chris , you are only 16 and apparantly you have mastered or sailed at "Competitive level" 420, 600, 29er, 29erxx, 800, and now a 49er.............!!!!!!!!11

I have never said I mastered any of them, I have sailed them. 420s are not rocket science, sailed an 800 once, 600 3 times, 29er I used to sail and XX i tried one as maybe a step to the 49er, decided not too and went for the 49er. Never once said I mastered any of them.. I said I got bored the 600 but that doesn't mean I mastered it, I just found it boring although it is a nice boat I would prefer a kite on it (Again I was trying a friends as I wasdn't sure what to get.) What I had meant to say in was competitive in the 29er and the RS800 I have sailed, unless club racing counts as competitive in the 800 (hence the vague - not really but kind of because we raced other 800s 420s I sail with the school and have for two years but we are now moving to fireflys Edited by Chris Bridges |

On that basis I have sailed 36r, Marblehead, 10 rater and A class (models} National 12, RNSA, Whaler, National 14, Mirror, Topper, Laser, Lightning, Supernova, Wayfarer, GP14, 505, Graduate, Lark, Enterprise, B14, ISO, Laser 2, Javelin, Zoom, Tasar and a few I have forgotten, give me a few weeks and I will fit some more in. So I'll be an expert then?

I think that for anyone who is slightly larger than the average 29er sailor the 800 is a much easery boat to sail than the 29er, more stable, less inclined to pitch pole without the spinny and dosn't fall over if you stop for a rest.

Bang on. If you were the weight of an average 29er sailor it would not be fun, but the 29er is a lot less stable pitches easily even with spinnaker whereas the RS800 doesn't do any of them.. I found it way easier and definitely way easier than the XX rig. I never claimed to be an expert, I have just said I sailed them and given what I think of the boat.. |

Seeing as he has sailed it I would say that it's reason enough to compare it to another boat. Published boat reviews are done on a days sailing of a boat.

Perhaps i am being a little harsh! Published reviews Ross are generally written by top sailors who have a wealth of experience and knowledge! Just for informations sake a 800 does pitch pole i have seen it happen, 2 sailing in one is just as bad as in many other classes of that pedigree. |

you only have to sail a boat once to know what it is like. I know it was easier to sail for me than a 29er, you can tell with any boat. 18 knots with very few capsizes, compared t my first time out in a 29er in similar wind, where we capsized a lot more. I also picked the 800 up a lot quicker. Its pretty obvious what a boat is like to sail even if you do only sail it once, hence the point of try before you buy type things. I don't see why you care so much, thats just how I found it, the question was asking about 800s and what we think of them, so I answered it. Others might find it different but I found the 800 easier to sail than the 29er, the only thing that could may be harder is helming on the wire which is easy to pick up.. Or maybe playing the main yourself if your not used to that (but having sailed normal classes where the helm does its fine). Could probably have the crew take it anyway, although I am not sure, can't think what the setup was like now! If you find a boat easyish to sail in 18 knots you will further up the wind range, fair enough critizing me for saying its easier if I sailed the 29er in 27 knots and the 800 in 5 but you have a pretty good idea of what it is all about in 18 - 20. |

OK I did say they don't but that was a "they don't pitch pole as easily".. Any boat can pitch pole just some easier than others. It was very hard for us to pitch pole it in 18 knots, whereas with the 29er it could be done rather easily spinnaker or no spinnaker. I just gave my opinion thats what was asked for, people don't post on a forum for the experts advice only, its nice to have it from other normal sailors too. EDIT Not saying I have a wealth of knowledge, but I have sailed several skiffs, and based on that I gave an answer. If your not interest in my opinion then so be it, but it wasn't you that asked about the boat in the first place!
