Hi all Just catching up on this after a couple of week away. To clarify, the forum has always been a very small part of YachtsandYachting.com, and now is even smaller. There are undoubtedly better places and methods for sailing discussion now, with social media's rise, and undoubtedly the different formats of that will and do rise and fall. YachtsandYachting.com is far more about sailing news and editorial. It's what we spend our time on and concentrate on very hard. It's where the site's traffic is, and there are a vast number of reports and articles on the site. Overall site traffic is huge compared to when the forum first started and continues to grow. For those that don't know, ST / Y&Y paper magazine hasn't been the same company as YachtsandYachting.com for well over a decade now. With reference to grass roots I was a bit surprised by a few comments on this thread. We try our very best to publish full results and talk about all levels of the fleet. On a personal level I run youth sailing at my club, and participation in sailing is probably my greatest passion. I can only assume either the posters of the comments haven't read of seen any of the work I've done on that front or I'm getting it seriously wrong. I'm all for seeing discussion groups elsewhere, such as on facebook, and I do believe they provide a better solution for chat, as they should with the resources they have! I also tend to watch (and contribute) more on some of those than I do here. So is it time to put the forum down? Probably. The software is outdated (as many have pointed out). It's also quite tricky to switch everything over to a better solution, so is something we've avoided doing, instead concentrating on the core areas of the site. I'll have a good chat with Mags and see what's the best way forwards. Many thanks, Mark

TPE is a closed group, so people who are remotely curious have to join to see what it's all about.

Personally I think you'd have done better not posting those reasons, others will no doubt disagree..... a partisan attitude and wonky sense of justice won't help you IMO ......Good Luck anyway ![]() Edited by Sussex Lad - 13 Apr 23 at 5:18pm |

I wish you all the best with TPE as the sport needs something, but I think some of your aims are outside the ability of any fb page to for fill . I just hope it does not go the way the one TT set up a few years ago . Anyway if nothing else your comment that ‘ the censorship of GRF was unjust ‘ did make me smile.

That’s some achievement, your 8 friends must have a lot of friends or be influencer friends. I wish you best of luck building it. I’m a million miles from knowing anything about digital marketing but one of the most interesting nautical groups has ‘artwork Tuesdays’ and ‘it’s all in the detail Saturday. Possibly not transferable to TPE but weekly posts would be interesting: what you doing this weekend? How was the weekend for you? (Could be what went well or bad). Show us yours. For a bit of fun the caption competitions always are winners, the RYA Duck competition was popular (one of the few sailing competitions I’ve won)

Sheesh. You guys sure know how to keep flogging a dead horse ;-)
The forum has been in its death throes for a long time, and life support for quite a while. At some stage, a dignified end is the kindest thing to do. I wouldnt do this to my dog.... Many forums of many hobbies and sports I used to frequent have moved over to social media. Whether thats a good thing or bad thing is up to each persons perspective, but it is the way of the world, head buried in the sand or not. Besides all the reasons given in this long thread, iGRF, soical media, changing world etc etc, the other limiting factor here is a curiosity I have long pondered. This is a Y&Y forum frquented only by a handful of dinghy sailors. Where do all the Yotties/Sportsboats/AC/VOR/Vendee people hang out? Simply because there is no reason for them to come here. Sailing Anarchy survives as a forum because it has Yotties, Crusiers, Racers, AC, Vendee, Ocean Race advocates where discussion has been very informative (in general, though the AC area is a bit 'ripe'. If you went to the SA Dinghy forum, it too has a limited audience. SA would not survive just on dinghy conversations There is nothing in the Y&Y forum to bring other 'sailing' groups to it. The layout is a mess in any case. Why would Mark Jardine spend any money at all on making this forum any better for such a small number of people. It is a cost for him just to keep it going. Why would he? My other hobby - photography - has been dominated by the DPReview forum for years. It is frequented by thousands, and yet Amazon, its owner, is closing it down. Much gnashing of teeth from the thousands but an inevitability when YouTube and FB groups now exist for folks to get their photo fix I strongly suspect that many dinghy sailors now hang out in their respective CA forums/FB groups/Instwhatever. It is a 'tribe' thing these days. Please let this forum come to a dignified end and move on to where others now hang out. I dont think the PinEnd has enough traction yet, or is the answer, but it is another bar room to hang out if you wish to. Remember the good old days of the forum with fondness, not with sadness as to what it has now become - only on life support because of the handful of people who cannot see that the big red switch is the right thing to do.
