I have eight fb friends. I started The Pin End in February and it has just reached 1000 members. A growth and usage rate this place would die for, but makes no effort to achieve. I set up TPE precisely as an replacement to here because it is moribund, abandoned by its owner and because the censoring of GRF was unjust. Obviously it is fashionable to rail against FB, but it has its place. Within a few weeks membership of TPE is bigger than most clubs or class associations. We can use that as a voice - to speak to the RYA on issues that matter, to organise regattas free from class tribalism, to share concerns and good practise, to banter with like minded people, to influence the industry and in so many other ways. Open your mind, use your imagination - it’s a free resource for you to use if and when you want to.

But other some forums are still quite busy. This place has lost critical mass. I think there are a few things whih have helped kill it. The vociferous few who bang on about fast development boats being a dead end. The broken-record 'Laser is bad' gang alienating a good slice of the market. The lack of any engagement from class racing enthusiasts. The people who care too much about their results on PY. The worst formatting problems of any forum I've ever used, and that includes some totally amateur efforts run on freeware. The way everything is chopped into too many subforums while all the discussion either goes into the 'development' area because it's at the top, or sinks without trace. Perhaps the key thing is that it's never really been a place for off-topic random stuff? If you go to a certain well known motoring forum, you can get advice on any subject, chat about music or work or whatever. Also some forums seem to have moderators or other interested parties (maybe related to sponsors) who make an effort to post something to keep things going.

My impression is there are not a lot of interesting "new developments" to discuss in dinghy land compared for example to the time when all the new asymmetrics came out.
At the end of the day even iGRF contributed with his design efforts. But maybe that is just part of a larger trend away from putting a lot of effort and thought in personal sailing dinghy ownership?

I have a smart phone, no social media on it, purely on medical grounds though, not trying to be trendy. I had a serious head Injury which left me with various issues, main one being epilepsy, but, main reason for minimising phone staring, the pupil in my right eye seizes up, no idea why and have no intention of informing my GP about it.

As others have said the decline of forum usage was inevitable given the rise of other social media options and changing fashions.
Also there seems to be something else going on with peoples attitude towards "connectivity". This may or may not be relevant but it could indicate the way the wind is blowing: Understanding the decline in internet usage. https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2023-deep-dive-time-spent-online a small blip surely? or maybe not? Also The Return of Dumbphones: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60763168 ......a loss of trust in things internet? I had a look at the Pin end.....mmm. OK there may be millions using FB but not many of them are using that particular group. |

'Google groups' works ok for small groups and is fully searchable, Minisail class have had one for years.

Anything which hangs on in there whilst Facebook's user base crumbles under the weight of its own self inflicted anxiety and social angst is good by me.... Nick Clegg's 3rd Act hasn't lived up to the first two.
My kids only have meta accounts by zucker-stealth: WhatsApp and Instagram. They're not in to metaverse / oculus quest stuff.... I guess that's their generation's Games Workshop equivalent for incels, uglies and the future victims of creepy dudes. Even insta is decidedly middle-age (and very middle-class mum-sy), can't see my youngest sticking with that for much longer, she thinks it's decidedly naff compared to TikTok. However WhatsApp still has a stranglehold on cross platform messaging... so a shout out for Signal, download it.. it'll only achieve critical mass when enough of us have it This is still a good place to discuss sailing - esp if interest in maintained despite being a bit of break from boat ownership... but the formatting on here could use an upgrade admittedly. As for Clubs and Classes - despite the failure of Google+, I think Google accounts and contributors still have role to play in collating lists and search content worth a damn.

I remember that well.
SA is ok these day IF you stay away from any threads about politics ( trump etc ) , covid and funny enough AC racing . But I would still rather post and read stuff on here , too much Sunfish, Rocket and Sol chat 😂. On the other hand I would never of learned about the US Force 5 and the Australian sabre if I had not lurked there.

Signal to noise ratio seems to be diminishing though. One thing to be said for SA, when he-I-shall-not-name tried his nonsense there, he got called out so quickly and so robustly he cried off with tail between legs... |

Your probably right, and I totally agree for clubs and classes fb works really well . But I have yet to find a general interest fb page in any of the sports I have a interest in that works as well . Tbh I suspect we will having the same conversation about fb in a decades time. As most young people have already moved to other social media platforms and the demographic of fb is already very middle aged .
