Was thinking about midweek sailing. Our life has changed and we've lost our weekends to work. This happened for others years ago. Through the summer our club sails on thursday evenings only, again this is not always possible for us. 

One of the problems with a club being more flexible in this way is the requirement for more volunteers. Many clubs struggle to find enough of them to sail once a week. Great if a club can do it though.

and Robert:  Why even mention them?.......After much discussion on this forum about improving the image of sailing and the current RYA strategy of doing the same........your "Drowned at birth, knuckle dragging" comment aimed at 7 million folk on a public forum doesn't do it imo.

I am quite shocked at the attitude toward anglers on this forum and wonder, from some of the postings, what sort of people I am mixing with in my chosen sport of sailing. I grew up in Acton in west London and there was no opportunity to be able to understand sailing and the people who took part in the activity.  As a nipper I spent many a happy day fishing and as the son of a railway worker, engine driver, I was lucky enough to be able to travel long distances to enjoy this pastime.  Over a couple of winters, as a teenager, I went fishing most Sundays at Ruislip Lido and saw the 'yachts' sailing in the lake. My thoughts at the time was that people who sailed 'yachts' were 'posh' and rich. I moved into sailing at 27 years of age as my chosen sport of rallying became prohibitively expensive.  My point is that I think we have a serious issue with how sailing is perceived by the majority and from what's been said on this thread I am starting to feel that the perceptions of the teenage me might have been right and that sailors consider themselves to be in some way above 'the rest', snobs in fact.  If the majority of the population perceive that sailing is for the privileged few is it any surprise that it's hard to attract newcomers in the numbers we would like to see on the water?  For the record I still hanker to find the time to get out my tackle and hit the river banks yet again and expect to have to allow for passing boats in pursuit of this as well as being aware of the need to be responsible in terms of dealing with litter and tackle.  I am lucky to be a member of a fishing, sailing, rowing, canoeing/kayaking club just a 5 minute walk from home in Chichester Harbour.  I believe that the club was originally a fishing club and that sailing was a later addition
