Yep when I've pointed that out to canoers and paddle boarders on the broads they seem very surprised they have to pay broads tax currently £37.78... Edited by The Q - 21 May 22 at 5:29am |

Nicola.
I take my hat off to you for picking up a new "thing" and doing it well. However, to quote "this is now what people expect of an activity that if you put the effort in you can perform at high level if you put the time and effort in" The plain fact is and will always be that sailing ( if we are talking racing) isn't like that. There are so many layers required to be in place before someone can "perform at high level" that it will never happen for "people" . Yes anyone can learn to sail but of those not all will ever truly "get it". And this is not me being elitist or classist or bigotist or racist but simply a fact. A very few, how ever much effort they put in will get to high level. Effort in whatever form be it, taking coaching, fitness training or mental theory will not equate to straight line improvement in results, anybody who expects that is doomed to disappointment. I knew a man, a very bright man, a very driven man, a very physically together man who gave up sailing through frustration at effort in not being rewarded as he wanted. Yes he became good but there were people who were better for no reason he could see. He had been a county swimmer in his teens & twenties and left sailing to pursue triathlon and the straighter line payback he needed the effort expended. I make no claims for myself "I know my place" in the pecking order. At least in my head I know my place and that suits me, not smugness, simply an acceptance of my failings which allows me to enjoy what feedback I can from the feel of "simply sailing". |

I thought about some sort of dance type of thing, my torso is stiff from training, need to loosen up, looks good but can hardly reach to pull on my socks, will have a Google see what is about.
Congratulations on getting to a level to perform. |

I think you are missing the point somewhat I've been dancing not quite 6 years, not quite 5 years ago i decided this is 'my thing' now ... this february i took ' advanced / pro' classes on a trip to London nd wasn't 'spat out the back' in a couple of weeks time i'll be performing it;s not a paid gig but some of the dancers i'll be dancing with are professionally trained ... this is now what people expect of an activity that if you put the effort in you can perofrm at high level if you put the time and effort in equally when i started sailing as a 12.5 year old i didn;t plan on getting to WInter Training / Squad selction before i aged out of the system ... |

My niece is much the same. Doesn't mind paying when someone's adding value, like some coaching, kit hire, or a minibus to the coast, but mostly turning up and getting on with it is not much of a revenue stream for anyone. A colleague's wife does sea swimming, she'll pay a small fee for organised events. Like surfers, they'll even avoid paying for parking if they can.

WPSNA could be way better than it is … I guess that when designed it was never intended to segregate under 18s from adults. It is also made much better for having the Cove a short distance away! I don’t completely buy into iGRFs comments about paddle boarders. I love Salcombe YC, Gallants and RFYC but I suspect they survive because they are firmly locked in their community, and because a large number of dinghy sailing obsessives have migrated to the South West.

My sailing wife is also a paddleboarder. If her experience of other people in the the sport/ pastime is anything to go by.. They really don’t want to pay to do it , they just think they can turn up anywhere and paddle .
