Totally agree about the holiday companies not so sure many club racers will take a chance on it.

Yes, I think the list of club racers who are willing to buy a new boat, but have no interest in doing any open events, even their own club's, is not very long.

It'll have to be cheap for the holiday sailing centres to buy it in quantity and they'll probably only be talking a couple of dozen boats max (Sunsail bought 6 of the first Blaze's back in the day, none since AFAIK).

Would be interesting to know how many clubs still have fixed fleets, probably not many, fairly certain South Staffs used to, but think they now have a handicap fleet. We have a fair few Y&Y contributors who have gone to fairly recently launched boats, D zero, Aero and H2, difficult to see who the one off sailors are going to be.

If I remember correctly (and it was a long while ago)Sunsail bought the blazes and some others , just after they moved into Port Solent with a view to the sort of turn up, pay and play arrangement that is talked about here from time to time. I know the head office types spent a lot of time hooning up and down but idont think the idea ever took off. The blazes may have gone to Datchet where Topper were trying something similar at there centre there. I know I borrowed one to sail in the Bloody Mary

They were 501-506 and, I believe, yellow hulls, and logged on the database as sold to Sunsail Greece. The haven't shown up on the database as belonging to a currently active UK sailor (though the list is not complete with a little over 200 of the 360 (ish) boats built accounted for. There a couple of yellow hulls being raced but they are mk3s so most likely a customer choice.

Is the Polestar going to be quicker than the main single handers, Laser, D0, Aero, may be quicker if it is less likely to capsize.

Ask GRF? It should be quite quick, it's light, plenty of sail area, the wings give good righting power. It has enoigh waterline length and doesn't look to have too much wetted area. So the main question might be how good a shape is it? or is the rig nice and controllable. If it's anything like optimum for speed, it ought to be quicker than your list, comparable with an RS300? After all, it has the benefit of hindsight to evaluate what works in all the above boats. But, all out speed may not have been the only goal, I suspect it's about aiming for good OD racing with a range of helm sizes, possibly at the expense of chasing the lowest PY (or GRF's version of Thames Tonnage). I.e. maybe it is aimed at being 'fast' for most people, most of the time not just 'very fast for the optimum helm in its favoured conditions'? For instance, I might be faster around the course in a boat where the toestraps were in the right place for me, so we should be looking at the complete package of design, tuning and class rules? Until we see the final thing on the water in a range of conditions, we don't know |

According to the link in the OP it has a 6m sail and a max beam of 1.9m so wider but with less power than a L@ser. No weight is given but it's not going to be under about 45kg with these wings. Compared to an RS300 it is slightly narrower and has only 60% of the sail area so it doesn't seem likely it'll be anywhere near an RS300 in performance. It'll probably be much easier to sail though...

Given a guess on weight I think the Peaky/Fuller number works out in the 1060-1080 region for the largest rig, so it would seem to be targeted in the middle of the singlehander market.
