Yes people were quite resourceful in those days. There’s a story that way back someone from our club stuck a flying fifteen on the roof after first removing the keel and putting it on the back seat. I guess it didn’t do the back seat much good. Not quite sure the veracity of that one.

I remember seeing film of dinghies being transported by train to events - can't remember if it was pre or post war. Did people make more effort to get to events then? Possibly Dr Beeching had something to do with that not being possible any more.

Sailing regattas started well before ordinary people emade a habit of putting trailers or roof racks on cars. When you look around, there are in fact a great many racing boats chartered out for regattas, mostly bigger, more easily damaged and more expensive than a dinghy. Many of the IoW clubs have fleets of club-owned dayboats. Insurance is do-able. If a bunch of people I know can rent a 40ft boat for Anigua Week, then it can't be beyond the wit of man to insure a few Por*stars? I'm not sure if it's more common with dinghies in Mainland Europe? The other thing which might happen is that people choose to sail a class where there is a good choice of regatttas without travelling very far? In the UK, most sailing clubs are not very far from the next, you could get a respectable open meeting fleet from a sensible radius, if people chose classes with that in mind? Let's face it the numbers of people travelling frequently in most dinghy classes has dropped over the years, possibly because the traffic is so bad? The problem isn't IC cars, it's too many cars?

Most if not all commonly sailed modern dinghies come well under the unbraked trailer limit and being fairly low profile offer relatively low aerodynamic resistance. So it is unlikely towing what we do will be beyond the capacity of all future low emission vehicles. 
Now if this forum was about motorhomes & caravans........................................... Confused

It is entirely natural to react to the prospect of change in a black and white way, myself included.

The reality is likely to be much more grey and multifaceted taking in many of the points raised.
