Good idea but battery capacity would be limited by the weight we could expect an 80 year old lady to carry, currently she just has to lift a petrol hose or a plug in charging cable.

Long ago I tried to push the idea of universal sized batterys that you just switched at a gas station where they were stored in racks trickle charged by solar/wind, the fuel companies get to stay in the loop, battery production gets to be developed by rival companies all claiming better mileage etc, but all cars get built with a universal 'slot' to slide the battery in and out of, and charged for each use. Government would even benefit by vat on charging whatever. But just like dinghyworld, nobody with any vision or thought of standardisation in charge. So here we are with dozens of different cables, attachment points, charge units not working, no chance of dealing effectively with terrace street parking, everyone shy of all electric vehicles due to range fear. Typical mess brought about by capitalist competition driven dogma.

The HGV is running on a working system in Germany, I think there are other systems in Denmark and a couple of other countries, not a new idea, you mentioned trolley buses. system uses 670volts DC, Must have a automatic system for dropping collector when approaching bridges, collector probably retracts when power cuts.

[QUOTE=423zero]Everything seems like a agenda that doesn't benefit the majority of the population, sensible people who can read and Google expert opinions tend to agree, battery cars aren't going to work, yet the original date of 2040 for sales of new ICE cars to end was shortened to 2030,why? There appears to be no extensive projections for the future of personal transport or impact on leisure and tourism. We have bicycles and motorbikes, battery motorcycles seem to be very efficient, perhaps motorbike and sidecar combinations
![]() Our EV works, and we live outside of town in an area with about one third the population density of the Scottish Highlands (lowest population density in the UK) and about half the size of Scotland. We still have an ICE, mainly for use around the paddocks and the four hour drive down to the yacht on the coast, but will move to a plug-in hybrid later. The EV is a little old one that doesn't tow but perhaps one of the changes people may have to make is to drive an EV to the dinghy park at their local club (as we do) rather than towing all over the shop.

When I were but a lad my grandfather, who was in charge of generating electricity and building power stations for the state and became head of the national EV association when he retired, said that trolley-bus systems like that were the best option for long distance EVs. His concept was that the "pantograph" would automatically retracted once you left the main road and you then ran on batteries; I assume that's the same concept above. It's a shambles, but cars are semi-durable items, there would be no point waiting until we had sufficient renewable electricity and then starting to phase out new IC cars. Maybe in future, sailing events will move away fom the model of the competitor dragging his own boat hundreds of miles? Or maybe whne people realise that CO2 is past the point of no return, we'll abandon all the eco-pretense?

I know but the irony is that all the things they've been forced to do to make a diesel engine "cleaner" has stopped them from ever being carbon neutral. The fact that they had to cheat says it all really. Electric isn't the way forward for mainstream distance travel either and until there is a proper, dare I say nationalised, public transport system that runs on time and you aren't worried about what you are sitting in people are going to want private transport. The ICE wont be disappearing for 30-40 years.
