How much more is a pot of varnish over a pot of paint?

I suspect he already has a pot of paint....
I painted my spare mast with white toplac, which seems to have done ok. Don't have the facilities to be messing about with 2 pack paints... Assuming the weather allows hoping to get my main mast done at some point this winter... |

OK then a quick search of Fleabay has International Goldspar at £13. Not as good as 2 pack but still better than Wilkos own brand I suspect. No one ever said sailing was cheap, but my top tip for the day would be to politely tell your girlfriend that due to the non-sustainable capitalist undertones of Valentine's day and all associated "traditional" celebrations rammed down our throats by the likes of Clinton cards etc, you will not be taking her out for a candlelit meal for two now, but instead you propose that she comes round to your "romantic 14 mast varnishing party"...it will be just the two of you, and by the way it's bring your own varnish. Hope this helps. |

Hi Alex, Last winter I painted my carbon mast with three coats of Goldspar after gently sanding it down. It was easy to do and I got a good finish (I varnished it in the house in a warm temperature leaving it overnight between coats). I am very satisfied with the job albeit I don't know how long it will last before it will need doing again. The main reason for my post is that I was always under the impresssion that you could only use two pack paints and varnishes over existing two pack finishes, whereas normal paint or varnish can be used over anything (after reasonable preparation). I think that it would be a good idea to try and find out what kind of finish is already on your mast before just using two pack. An alternative would be to make a really thorough job of getting every trace of the old paint off before using two pack. Goldspar is a safe option. Someone with much greater knowledge than myself might like to comment on the feasibility of using two pack varnish over the top of 'normal' varnish and any possible adverse consequences.
